1990 Jan. 06 We join other Salemtowne people in serving as "jurors" at the special Willamette Law School course on trial law. They feed us well as our reward.

1990 Jan. 09 Glenn on REAL jury duty at the county seat, Dallas, OR.

1990 January Glenn continuing his water color painting classes.
We keep busy with Travel Club, Friars' monthly pancake breakfasts, other Salemtowne activities. Also visiting and looking after Noma, and visiting the Kemmerichs frequently. And very active with the Native Plant Society.

1990 Jan 19 A winter visit to the Coast, staying with the Joles at Depoe Bay.

1990 Feb. 03 Mark to Tucson.

1990 Feb. 06 Cold with snow.

1990 Feb. 12 More snow! Ice! For about 3 days.

1990 Feb. 20 We leave for warmer climes—heading for Arizona. Enroute we visit: Crescent City, Prairie Creek St. Park, where we check in on our favorite giant Redwood "Big Guy;" Sonoma (2 days), Bezemers in Pine Grove, where Henk takes us to winery where he works. Ashenfelters in Grass Valley, Mohave, Laughlin.

1990 Mar. 01 We arrive at our rented "park model" mobile home at the "Sunrise RV Resort" in Apache Junction, AZ. $1,025 for the month. We take the bikes with us.

1990 Feb. 22 – 28 Mark and Austin friends go to Trinidad for Carnival.

1990 Mar. 3 NPSO friends, George& Harriet Schoppert stay near our mobile home park. We visit Boyce Thompson Arboretum with them, hike with them in "Lost Dutchman" St. Park, and later go up to the lakes below Roosevelt Dam. "White knuckle" drive to Apache Lake, via Fish Hill grade.

1990 Mar. 09 Eleanor Roberts dies.
We visit quite often with Bob Johnson, who spends the winter in Apache Jct. At his mobile home.

1990 Mar. 13 Hike into the Superstition Mts. With Bill & Maxine Paull.

1990 Mar. 17 Mark arrives, stays with us in our "park model."

1990 Mar. 18 We hike to "Siphon Draw" in Superstition Mts. St. Park with Mark. Mark leaves later that day.
During the month we also visit: Ray copper mine, Aravaipa Canyon, Canyon Lake (with Bob & Alice Rupp), to see Masseys (former Salt Lake neighbors) who live at "Ahwatukee," Ron McEuen, do more hiking in the Superstitions.

1990April 01 We rent a "casita" in Green Valley for one week at $249. In Green Valley we visit with Knoches and go with them to: Nogales, Madera Canyon, Old Tucson."
Karen goes to Salt Lake City to see friend Cathy Anderson.

1990 April 06 Mark goes to Singapore, Hong Kong. Working for two weeks, then on vacation. We have lunch with Ginny Hutchison, Barb's sorority sister from WU, who is an Atkinson, and was in Pakistan with Hallidays.

1990 April 08 We leave Green Valley, drive to Harrah's at Laughlin.

1990 April 09 We go to St. George, UT, then visit Zion Park and Barbara's friend, Pat Whitbeck, in St. George.

1990 April 11 To Salt Lake City, visit Johnstons.

1990 April 12 To Boise, visit Terry & Gloria who live there. Terry is working for Hewlett Packard. Stay overnight at Farewell Bend.

1990 April 13 To the Dalles, and Tom McCall St. Park, arriving back in Salemtowne the day before Easter.We even sneak in a couple NPSO field trips in April: Baskett Slough & "Camassia" in West Linn.

1990 May 02 Glenn's cousin, Lois Vance, has surgery for colon cancer.

1990 May 04 We take the bikes to Silver Falls St. Park for a 3-mile ride.

1990 May 06 Mark calls from Hawaii.

1990 May 08 Barbara organizes an "Emergency Preparedness" program for Salemtowne.

1990 May 30 We help organize a computer class which meets regularly in the Farmhouse.
Visitors during the month: Dee Dee & Don Roberts, the Paulls, Roger & Bonnie. Field trips to: Fanno Meadows, Kingston Prairie. Took Kemmerichs to Hood River to visit Johnsons & to Portland to visit Al's former secretary, Melba Kehoe. Many trips to Woodburn to see Noma and Kemmerichs.

1990 June 06 Glenn does a photographic inventory for Kemmerichs, who are now considering selling their home and moving to a retirement apartment.

1990 June 08 Karen completes her last year of teaching at Prosser High School. Plans to return to Seattle and get a Masters in Library Science.

1990 June 12 We go to Kennewick, and on to Prosser. Help Karen load a U-Haul moving van. Karen sells "Jacob."

1990 June 14 We head for Seattle; Karen driving the van, we driving her car (the white Datsun) and our car. Karen's new address: 7535 19th Avenue N.E., Seattle. Housemates: Sue Casson & son, David. We head back for Salem leaving Karen with a busy weekend of unloading the U-Haul.
Ken Hudson, the husband of Glenn's Aunt Vina dies.

1990 June 18 Karen's classes at the Univ. of WA begin.

1990 June 19 Anita Aguilar visits Lois Vance in Prosser.

1990 June 20 The Knoches come; they are house-sitting near Salemtowne for a month while the McKinleys take their RV to Alaska.

1990 June 25 We drive, via the Painted Hills & John Day, to Wallowa Lake, meeting the Joles. They camp; we stay at Wallowa Lake Lodge. Take tram to top of Mt. Howard, drive to end of Lostine River Canyon and hike a short way into the Wilderness Area. Return on the 29th.
During the month, we do some Rare & Endangered plant monitoring in Polk County for NPSO.

1990 July 04 Mark goes on a canoe trip through Desolation Canyon on the Green River, as he did in August, 1985

1990 July 07 Glenn's last uncle, Orvel Terril passes away. We go to Kennewick for his memorial service. Then, we drive to Crystal Mt. On east side of Mt. Rainier and meet the Knoches. Stay at the "Alta Crystal Lodge" there. Go to: Paradise Meadows, to Sunrise Meadows for—sunrise! Take ski lift to top of Crystal Mt. for dinner. Return to Salem on July 11.

1990 July 12 We continue new tradition of picking Marionberries at Gehring's fields below our house.

1990 July 15 Ashenfelters visit, probably heading to Quadra Island off Vancouver Is., British Columbia where they spend a couple months in their motor home & fish.

1990 Aug. 03 Chi Omega reunion is held at Salemtowne. Mark returns to Austin from Utah.

1990 Aug. 06 We have the pleasure of again spreading bark dust on a warm summer day.

1990 Aug. 16 The pancake breakfast "Friars" have their annual reward—dinner out. We show wildflower slides for the program.

1990 Aug. 17 Karen's Library summer school session ends at UW. We mail plane tickets to Mark and Karen so they can join us in Hawaii for our 40th anniversary.

1990 Aug. 27 Mark goes to Odessa. We get forty pounds each of pears and Gravensteins apples. Apparently not yet fully converted to buying Muirhead Cannery fruit.

1990 Aug. 28 Made applesauce and went to the State Fair.

1990 Sept. 03 Mark returns to Austin.

1990 Sept. 05 We take Noma to the US Bank where she signs her Living Will.

1990 Sept. 11 We fly to Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii. Mark & Karen also arrive, we rent a car—it's too small, go back and get a bigger one. Check in at the "Bali Kai" condos near Kona. We drive to the northern point of the island, see the big cattle ranch; see coffee plants & macadamia orchards at the higher elevations. Do some snorkeling.

1990 Sept. 14 We stay at the "Volcano House" for two nights, see the "black sands" beach, and hike over the still-warm lava fields. Walk through an old growth "island" in the lava fields near Volcano House. Mark hikes across the Kilauea Caldera to Halema'uma'u Crater and back up to Volcano House—just as Mark Twain once did..

1990 Sept. 16 We fly to Maui, staying near Kihei, at the Luana Kai condos. Go to a Luau at the Royal Lahaina Hotel, drive to top of Haleakala Crater before dawn, to see the fog! Also see the "Nene" flightless goose. Visit: Iao Needle, old port of Lahaina, & snorkel at Kapalua Bay.

1990 Sept. 20 Mark and Karen fly home. Glenn & Barbara fly to Kauai, staying at the Lawai Beach Resort near Poipu. We drive through Waimea Canyon to Kalalau Lookout, hike a few miles of the Kalalau Trail high above the sea (where Barbara sprains her ankle at the end of the hike), and enjoy all the sea birds at Kilauea Lighthouse.

1990 Sept. 23 Mark in San Francisco for geophysical meeting.

1990 Sept. 24 We fly to Oahu, staying near Waikiki Beach at the "Hawaiiana Hotel." Take trolley around Honolulu, tour USS Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor (where Glenn was stationed in 1946-47. Drive all around the island one day.

1990 Sept. 28 We arrive back in Salemtowne. Pauline's knee tumor has returned, almost as large as before. She has MRI at Salem Hospital.

1990 Oct. 01 Karen's fall term starts at Library School, UW.

1990 Oct. 03 Candie Farley and her two children come down to see Noma. We meet her there.
Pauline has a series of doctor visits, MRI's, chest x-rays, biopsy, etc. Dr. Stevens says she will need more extensive surgery to remove knee tumor this time.

1990 Oct. 21 Mark leaves for Braunschweig, Germany. So. of Hamburg. Gone until Oct. 28. Visits " Black Forest" then crosses into East Germany by car, visiting the von Pressentin home estate at "Prestin" near Schwerin.

1990 Oct. 25 Pauline sees a plastic surgeon in Salem, "Dr. Carter" to see what would be needed after knee tumor surgery. He refers Pauline to Dr. Fletcher at OHSU in Portland.

1990 Oct. 27-28, the Joles come for a visit.

1990 Nov. 05 Barb again takes minutes at Salemtowne annual meeting.We are now on the Board of the local chapter of NPSO. Many meetings!

1990 Nov. 13 Pauline has first visit with Dr. Fletcher at OHSU.

1990 Nov. 16 Mark goes to Cozumel. Returns to Austin Nov. 24.

1990 Nov. 25 Pauline is admitted to OHSU, prepared for an unusual type of chemotherapy to shrink her knee tumor before surgery.

1990 Nov. 26 Pauline undergoes chemotherapy just to her left leg—veins & arteries are tied off and leg blood circulated through a chemo "bath." She remains hospitalized for surgery later. Al either stays with us or Noel, while Pauline is at OHSU.

1990 Dec. 03 Pauline has surgery to remove the now-shrunken knee tumor.

1990 Dec. 05 Pauline discharged from OHSU. Barbara's knuckles are beginning to enlarge from arthritis. We have a lot of her rings re-sized at Patton Jewelers in Woodburn.

1990 Dec. 09 We go on the annual Reno bus trip. Glenn won $150. Barbara lost.

1990 Dec. 17 Karen starts work at the NOAA library.

1990 Dec. 19 It snows and is COLD. We have a very cold spell for the rest of the month.

1990 Dec. 22 Karen comes down for Christmas, by train.

1990 Dec. 24 Mark flies in from Austin.

1990 Dec. 25 Too icy to go to Noel's for our traditional Christmas dinner. We do make it to Woodburn.

1990 Dec. 26 Karen takes the train back to Seattle.

1990 Dec. 29 Mark flies back to Austin.

During the year, we serve pancake breakfasts once a month with the Salemtowne "Friars," play pinochle on Tuesday nights, and with friends on weekend nights, and participate in trips with the Salemtowne Travel Club. Barbara serves as scribe for various Salemtowne groups, including the Board. We also give frequent slide shows at Noma's nursing home, or at NPSO meetings, or to friends. Both of wildflowers and trips. We are very active in the Salem chapter of NPSO and go on many field trips with them. We visit both Noma and Kemmerichs frequently in Woodburn.

1991 April 04 Glenn and Barbara to Austin to see Mark. We visit: Burnet, McKinney Falls, and National Wildflower Center, go to a wine country picnic, Enchanted Rock St. Pk and bluebonnet drive, Canyon Lake and Guadalupe River State Park, & a bike ride with Mark at Lake Austin.

1991 April 11 we return to Portland.

1991 April 12 take Kemmerichs. to fisheries reunion lunch ClackamasTowne.

1991 April 14 take Al to emergency room. Bad nosebleed.

1991 April 15 Al has biopsy with urologist at Salem hospital

1991 May 21 Barbara and Glenn to Prineville, Boardman, Kennewick, visit Aunt Audrey Altrogge and Lois Vance in Kennewick. Also visit with Doris Terril, Bob and Alice Rupp and Vina Hudson. Tour East Benton Co. Museum—many of the Terrils and Rupps volunteer there. Terril and Halliday material is in the museum.

1991 June 01 Barbara and Glenn to Kerby, Gold Beach, Coos Bay, return to Salem on June 4.

1991 June 17 Barbara takes Kemmerichs to Burlington, Washington. They drive to Baker Lake, and upper Skagit Valley. Al & Pauline have a chance to visit with old friends still in the area. Also visit Mount Vernon cemetery for Kemmerich's ancestors. Their last trip to the Skagit Valley area.
Karen goes to Glacier Peak and Prosser.

1991 July 18 Betty and Noel leave for Hawaii. Jason & Nicole go with them.

1991 July 19 Mark goes to Salmon River, Idaho for river rafting trip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon river.

1991 July 21 We go to Aberdeen, WA, around Olympic Peninsula, out to Neah Bay, tour wonderful Indian museum there; then to Port Angeles, meet Joles. Heat Wave in Port Angeles! No AC! Take both cars on ferry to Victoria.

1991 July 26 With Joles, we take ferry to Sidney & Anacortes.

1991 July 27 Guenzis and Kemmerichs at our place for dessert. Mark returns from Salmon River trip.

1991 Aug. 15 We stay overnight on Mt. Hood, at Cooper Spur ski lodge. Go to beautiful Lost Lake with Mt. Hood views. Dodge logging trucks coming back over pass near Mt. Hood. House painting is done when we return.

1991 Aug. 22 Winery tour with Salemtowne travel club—To Eola Winery.

1991 Aug. 23 We go to the State Fair.

1991 Aug. 30 Mark to Tokyo, enroute to Beijing, China and Borehole Gravity job.

1991 Sept. 01 Karen here, we celebrate her birthday early with Kemmerichs and Noel's family.

1991 Sept. 02 Barbara drives back to Seattle with Karen. Goes to the National Archives on Sand Point Way to do family history research, especially on Civil War veteran ancestors. Finds other helpful Skagit County censuses.

1991 Sept. 04 Barbara goes to Mt. Vernon, does family research at County Courthouse—finds great grandfather Karl von Pressentin's picture on Courthouse wall-as one of the early county commissioners. Stays with sorority sister, Wesley Sue Place in Burlington.

1991 Sept. 05 Barbara does research in Sedro-Woolley, including copying articles from original "Courier-Times" archives. Visits cousin John Chatterton in Arlington, back to Karen's in Seattle.

1991 Sept. 06 Barb takes Amtrak back to Salem. Nice ride!

1991 Sept. 19 We give slide talk on Hawaii for Salemtowne Travel Club. Barb's Chi O sorority sister, Barbara Duda & husband, Fred, come to Salem; we have lunch with them, Pratts and Norvada.

1991 Sept. 21 Mark to Tokyo?

1991 Sept. 27 Mark arrives in Seattle; he and Karen drive down to Salem. They visit with the family, celebrate Glenn's birthday, & return to Seattle on the 29th.

1991 Sept. 30 Mark returns to Austin.

1991 October 03 Salem Electric does an "energy audit" of our home.

1991 Oct. 14-17 Glenn & Barbara go to Port Townsend, Port Angeles, then ferry to Victoria where they stay at the Empress Hotel, using the "honeymoon special" and paying the price of the year they married: $50 per night. Take Grayline tour of Victoria area, and have "high tea" at the Empress.

1991 Oct. 18 Mark to Cozumel for diving, etc.

1991 Oct. 22 Mark goes from Mexico to Cuba. There, he goes to the "Isla de Juventud for scuba diving. Barbara and Glenn check out Keizer Retirement apartments as possibility for Kemmerichs.

1991 Oct. 24 We join a seniors' bowling group at Keizer bowling alley.

1991 Nov. 01 We join the Joles at the Holiday Surf Lodge in Depoe Bay.

1991 Nov. 02 Mark returns to Austin from Cuba.

1991 Nov. 04 Barbara takes minutes at the Salemtowne Annual Meeting.

1991 Dec.?? Mark goes through Copper Canyon, Mexico by train.

1991 Dec. 01-04 We go with the Salemtowne Travel Club to Reno, as part of Warren Ling's contingent of buses from the mid-Willamette Valley. Stay at Bally's MGM.

1991 Dec. 06 We sign a rental lease for one month in a Green Valley, AZ "casita" for April, 1992.

1991 Dec. 12 Canned fruit from The Dalles cannery, "Muirhead Cannery" arrives. Barbara no longer cans anything but applesauce!

1991 Dec. 23 Mark and Linda Nichols arrive fly in from Austin for Christmas.

1991 Dec. 25 Karen drives down from Seattle, meets us at Noel's for Christmas dinner.

1991 Dec. 27 We drive to coast with Mark, Linda and Karen. All but Glenn go on whale-watching trip from Depoe Bay.

1991 Dec. 30 Terry and Gloria come for dinner and visit with Mark and Karen.

1991 Dec. 31 Mark & Linda leave for Austin.

1992 January Glenn and Barb continue with seniors bowling, NPSO, Friars pancake breakfasts, Salemtowne pinochle and travel clubs. Also took parents to various doctor appointments, including Dr. Fletcher at OHSU for Pauline's leg tumor. Gave wildflower slide shows at nursing homes, garden club, etc.
A Salemtowne Computer Club was started at some time this year, with our assistance. Met once a week.

1992 Jan. 01-03 Al Kemmerich has surgery to remove his testicles, to slow down progress of prostate cancer. Earlier, he tried hormone shots, but could not tolerate them. Back to Salem Hospital Emergency, Al can't urinate. Kemmerich's stay with us until Jan. 6 as Al recuperates.

1992 Jan. 09-13 Mark goes to Salt Lake City for skiing.

1992 Jan 10 Barbara pays deposit of $200. to Keizer Retirement Apts. to hold apartment for Kemmerichs.

1992 Jan. 15 Barb gets nasty case of flu, with fever and cough. Is sick for the rest of January.

1992 Jan. 16- Feb. 2 Mark goes to Roatan, Honduras.

1992 Jan. 18 Husband of Glenn's cousin, Lois, Bruce Vance, dies.

1992 Jan. 28 Kemmerichs cancel reservation at Keizer Retirement apartments.

1992 February 02?? Mark goes from Honduras to Guatemala— Antigua and Highlands.

1992 Feb. 10 Kemmerichs sign up for Keizer Retirement apartment: no. 2030, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths. Rent starts March 1.

1992 Feb. 17 Noel & Betty, & Barbara & Glenn start helping get ready for Kemmerichs' move to Keizer Retirement. Move furniture, etc.

1992 Feb. 22 The Chi O's have a reunion lunch at Mission Mill in Salem.

1992 Feb. 27 Mark to Puerto Rico.

1992 Feb. 28-29 to Depoe Bay, Holiday Surf Lodge with Joles.

1992 Feb. 29 Mark to Trinidad, Port au Spain, for Carnival. Also to Grenada.

1992 March 05 Al & Pauline Kemmerich move to Keizer Retirement apartment.

1992 Mar. 08 Mark leaves Grenada, returns home via Miami.

1992 Mar. 10 Betty, Barb and Glenn clean up Kemmerich's Woodburn home.

1992 Mar. 14-15 NPSO field trip to eastern Columbia Gorge, staying in The Dalles. Gorgeous early spring wildflowers, especially, the thousands of pink "grass widows."

1992 Mar. 25 We started out for Green Valley, AZ. En route we went to: Redding, Bakersfield, Death Valley, staying at Furnace Creek, Laughlin (Harrah's), Gila Bend. Find wonderful petroglyphs near Laughlin.

1992 Mar. 26 Karen went to Salt Lake City for interview at Univ. of Utah Library.

1992 April 01 Glenn & Barbara arrive at the "Desert Casitas" Green Valley, AZ. Stay at: 1348 W. Desert Hills Drive.
Pauline has cataract surgery.

1992 April 03 Dinner at Knoches—with rain and hail! Diane was diagnosed with bone cancer (probably spread from undiscovered breast cancer) last winter. Now on pain medication.
While in Green Valley we: make trips to Madera Canyon, Titan Missile Base tour, King Canyon near AZ-Sonora Desert Museum with Schopperts, also Sabino Canyon, Sonoita & Patagonia, Arivaca Lake with Schopperts. Temps in the 80's, wildflowers wonderful! Spend Easter Sunday with Knoches, other trips to: Kitt Peak, San Xavier del Bac, Bisbee, staying overnight at Sierra Vista, Ramsey Canyon, Coronado Monument, and Nogales.

1992 April 06 Kemmerichs have an offer on their Woodburn home. $66,000.

1992 April 29 Karen flies back to Seattle; Mark flies out from Austin, helps Karen load U-Haul truck with Karen's belongings. They go to the opera as well!

1992 May 01 We leave Green Valley, to Laughlin, Ridgecrest, up Highway 395, " Fossil Falls," Whitney Portal, Bishop, to Bezemers, Grants Pass, home on May 7. Barbara has eye problem "flashing" lights. Sees Dr. Hikes later, "O.K."
Mark and Karen drive U-Haul truck to Salem, stay at our house, and then drive on to Salt Lake City.

1992 May 07 As we arrive at home, we find Packy & Addie McFarland mopping up in our house—the toilet tank in Barbara's bathroom had cracked—been leaking water for who knows how long? Probably after Mark and Karen left for Salt Lake City. Insurance agent gets drying fans, water has damaged upstairs and downstairs baths, and Nepal rug and dining room table leaves in downstairs bedroom closet. Hundreds of dollars in damage! Requires re-doing upstairs bathroom, so we put in Jacuzzi tub, new sink, counters, etc. Just wallboard repair and painting in downstairs bath.

1992 May 09 Mark celebrates his 40th birthday with a big party in Austin.

1992 May 15 Our WU Class of 52 has its 40th reunion, with luncheon. Glenn has the flu, misses it. Barbara & Fred Duda attend and visit with us.

1992 May 23 We attend WU Law School mock trials with Salemtowne people.

1992 May 29 Noma is moved to Keizer Retirement nursing home section.

1992 Dec. 05 Now-annual Reno bus trip with other Salemtowne people. Stayed at the Eldorado Hotel.

1992 Dec. 19 Al Kemmerich gives up driving. Gives his car to Noel. Jason uses it, and it is totaled in an accident before too long. Lots of Christmas party events, at Salemtowne, and at Noma's nursing home, etc.

1993 Jan. 11 Noel has blood in his urine, in great pain. Snow & ice are so bad; Betty can hardly drive him to the emergency room.

1993 Jan. 13 We get shots at Salem Clinic's "Travel Immunization" department for upcoming trip to Costa Rica.

1993 Jan. 14 Noel has a CAT scan/x-rays for kidney pain. Reveals tumor on left kidney.

1993 Jan. 15 Noel has surgery to remove his left kidney and large malignant tumor on it. Done at Mt. Hood Medical Center in Gresham.

1993 Jan. 16 We drive to Portland, stay overnight at a motel near airport. Go to see Noel who is doing well after the surgery. Leave our car at motel.
Glenn's aunt, Ivel Terril Lortz dies in Kennewick, WA.

1993 Jan. 17 We fly to Costa Rica courtesy of Mark's Christmas gift: frequent flyer tickets on Continental Airlines. We join forces with Karen (coming from Seattle) and Mark (coming from Austin) at the Houston Continental check-in area.Arrived in San Jose, Costa Rica at sunset, taxi to the "Cariari Resort Hotel" near the airport. Warm air—wonderful!

1993 Jan. 18 Took little plane, over jungle mountain tops, to "Quepos" on the west coast, on to Karahe Hotel near Manual Antonio Nat. Park. Stayed at Karahe Hotel 01-18 to 01-23

1993 Jan. 23-30Returned to San Jose, picked up rental car and checked in at "Los Yoses Apartotel" in the southeast section of the city. Made day trips to: Alajuelita in suburbs to see "Black Christ of Esquipulas" festival; Poas Volcano, Café Britt coffee tour; Nat'l. Museum in San Jose, (Mark and Karen toured the "insect collection" at the university); "Folkloric Fantasy" show in San Jose's opera house; Zarcero village with topiaries, en route to Arenal Volcano & Lake Arenal. Bad road to Lake Arenal required overnight stay in "Nuevo Arenal;" Puntarena, enroute back to San Jose; butterfly garden near San Jose; Cartago, Lankester Gardens with butterflies and orchids; Orosi river; Irazu Volcano, Turrialba, Reventazon River.

1993 Jan. 31We all flew back to our respective homes, delighted with our trip to Costa Rica.

1993 Mar. 13 NPSO field trip to Catherine Creek, where Barb fell, hurting big toe and breaking her camera.

1993 Mar. 17 Took Kemmerichs to Saalfeld's office, they set up a living trust.

1993 Mar. 19 Joles come for the weekend; we got to Portland to OMSI and see one of the Cinemax movies.

1993 Mar. 25 The "Spring Break Quake" occurs at 5:35 a.m. 5.4 magnitude, but manages to cause severe damage to Catholic churches in Mt. Angel and St. Paul, and also caused the State Capitol golden "pioneer" statue to rotate slightly on its base. The Capitol rotunda and dome is closed for a year. The Catholics wisely had earthquake insurance and both churches are rebuilt at great cost and a lot of time.

1993 Mar. 30 Barbara buys a new camera, and we try it out at an Indian Pow Wow at Rickreall Fair Grounds.

1993 April 06 Noel, Glenn, Barbara & Kemmerichs go to Saalfeld's office in Salem, and for more steps in setting up their living trust. Pauline has hard fall onto concrete steps when entering the building. No apparent problems from it. Glenn & Barb do the "legwork" to change the titles on Kemmerich's assets.

1993 April 10 NPSO field trip to Airport Park in McMinnville to see a rare Trillium. LOTS of them!

1993 Oct. 04 Barb has oral surgery with "Dr. Tyler" to remove impacted cuspid #6. A LONG and painful ordeal. Later, develops infection, and battles pain and infection for over a month.

1993 Oct. 05 Noma now seeing "Dr. Yue" frequently for painful foot—which developed ulcerated areas from poor circulation.

1993 Oct. 12 Glenn's brother, Leslie, has surgery for tongue cancer.

1993 Oct. 14 Barbara saw Dr. Tyler at his Woodburn office, for continuing infection. He pulled the baby tooth to relieve infection. On antibiotics now.
Leslie discharged from Kaiser hospital.

1993 Oct. 20 Barbara starts receiving her Federal pension at age 62. Her annuity claim number: CSA 3 479 296. Gross amount of her monthly annuity is $234.00

1993 Nov. 01 To Depoe Bay, staying at Gracies' Landing with the Joles. Returned on 11-03.

1993 Nov. 11 Al & Pauline have their 65th anniversary photo taken at "Daniels" in Woodburn. Barb sends announcement and photo to newspapers in area and in Mt. Vernon/Sedro-Woolley.

1993 Nov. 25 We share Thanksgiving dinner at Noel & Betty's.

1993 Dec. 03 We tour the Pittock Mansion in Portland with the Travel Club.

1993 Dec. 05 We leave for Reno and the annual Christmas bus trip with Warren Ling. Glenn wins 400 quarters at the Hilton! We return on 12-8.

1993 Dec. 13 Cecelia ("Ceal") Stupfel died. She was wife of Barbara's cousin, George Stupfel. We attend her funeral on 12-16.

1993 Dec. 24 We attend Christmas party at Noma's nursing home in Keizer.

1993 Dec. 25 We have Christmas dinner with Kemmerichs at their retirement apartments.

1993 Dec. 26 Kemmerichs take us and Noel & family to dinner for their anniversary, with a "Konditerei" chocolate cake later at their apartment.
In late December, Mark goes to Peru ( Machu Picchu & Arequipa), then to Chile, ending up in Rio de Janeiro for New Years.

1994 January We continue our activities with Salemtowne (Computer Club, Travel Club) and NPSO, plus looking after the Kemmerichs. Barbara takes minutes at Salemtowne Board meetings. Have pinochle parties at various homes in Salemtowne.

1994 Jan. 03 Noma Halliday passed away at the Keizer Retirement Center nursing home. Noma had spent the last ten years of her life in nursing homes, after her stroke in 1984. Her remains are cremated and placed in an urn next to Irl's at Belle Passi cemetery in Woodburn.

1994 Jan. 07 Funeral services for Noma were held at the Cornwell Mortuary in Woodburn.

1994 Jan. 13 Roger, Bonnie & grandson Sean stay overnight with us, enroute to their home in Downieville.

1994 Jan. 19 Barbara takes Al & Pauline to visit with "Mildred Eckley" who was in grade school in St. Paul, OR with Al. She lives in Salem, and saw Kemmerich's 65th anniversary photo in the Salem newspaper. They enjoy visits from then on.

1994 Jan. 21 We go with the Travel Club to Eugene to see " Oklahoma."

1994 April 02-20 We take driving trip to: Coos Bay, Brookings, Eureka, Ft. Bragg, Petaluma for 3 nights, seeing Wine Country), Salinas, Pinnacles Nat. Mon., San Luis Obispo (for 4 nights), Kettleman City (on I-5), Sacramento (where we call Bezemers and learn Henk had two strokes in the past week) also visit the Ashenfelters, who now live in retirement center "Eskaton" in Sacramento, Carson City for 2 nights, Ashland and return to Salem.

1994 May 11 We have 8 cubic yards of fir bark dust delivered for $115. Glenn and Barbara spread it.

1994 May 15 Barbara goes to big pottery show in Portland at Montgomery Park with Betty.

1994 May 17 We go on combined NPSO field trips: first to The Dalles for NPSO trip to Dalles Mountain; then on to Caldwell, Idaho for field trip to Succor Creek. Terry & the Skirrows from Boise join us. Rain showers turn the clay soils VERY slippery, we have white-knuckle ride out of Succor Creek and down to Leslie Gulch. Stay in Baker City enroute back to Salem. Return on May 21.

Mark returns from the San Juans, we meet Noel's for lunch in Salem with the Kemmerichs the next day. Mark leaves for Austin on 08-07.

1994 Aug. 11 Glenn's aunt, Audrey Halliday Altrogge passes away in Kennewick, just four months shy of her 100th birthday! She was born Dec. 28, 1894.

1994 Aug. 12 We meet Noel at the Clackamas fish hatchery grounds, with Al & Pauline Kemmerich. Noel videotapes their visit. The current occupants of our former home are employees of the Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife. We tour the house and grounds. Al fills in lots of details about living there.

1994 Aug. 13 Glenn having more problems with irregular heart beat. We cancel planned trip to Kennewick for Aunt Audrey Altrogge's funeral.

1994 Sept. 13 – 20 Barbara and Betty fly to Albuquerque, New Mexico for one week. Visit: Santa Fe, Taos (attend annual Taos art festival, O.C. Gorman signs his poster for us), Acoma, Laguna Feast Day near Acoma.

1994 Sept. 21 We have Elwood's Tree Service cut down Sequoia in back yard.

1994 Sept. 26 - 28 Glenn, Al & Noel fly to Reno, stay at the Flamingo Hilton. Return on 9-28. Al tours Reno car museum.

1994 Sept. 30 We have interior decorators give us ideas on draperies for living/dining room.

1994 Oct. 06 We order drapes from "Draperies Inc." in Keizer. $1300. total.

1994 Oct. 08 Terry here for dinner.

1994 Oct. 10 Made hotel reservations for 1995 Yucatan trip through AAA.

1994 Oct. 11 Started painting living and dining room. Barbara has annual exam, Dr. Winthrop discovers an enlarged thyroid, she has ultrasound test which reveals a thyroid nodule.

1994 Oct. 20 Glenn starts wall papering in living room and entrance hallway.

1994 Oct. 23 Mark to Los Angeles for conference. Betty & Noel come down; we tour Bush Barn art gallery, have lunch. Barb and Betty show their New Mexico slides at Kemmerich's.

1994 Oct. 30 Mark returns to Austin from Los Angeles.

1994 Nov.?? Mark takes his Jeep to Big Bend Nat. Park, Texas.

1994 Nov. 03 Barb has thyroid imaging at Salem Hospital.

1994 Nov. 05 We go to big "garage sale" at Mission Mill.

1994 Nov. 07 We fly to Las Vegas, stay at the Excalibur Hotel. See some of the new hotels with David & Carolyn Mullan. We take them to show at Excalibur. Stay with Mullans one night. Fly back on 10-10.

1994 Nov. 11 New drapes are installed.

1994 Nov. 16 Barbara sees surgeon, Dr. Eisenhut at Salem Clinic re: thyroid nodule.

1994 Nov. 24 We have Thanksgiving dinner at Noel's with Kemmerichs.

1994 Nov. 26 A new oak "entertainment center" is delivered.

1994 Dec. 01 We get malaria pill prescription from Salem Clinic.

1994 Dec. 06 Barbara has vocal chord consult pre thyroid surgery with Dr. Thompson, ENT.

1994 Dec. 07 Glenn & Barbara get gamma globulin shots at Salem Clinic—preparation for Yucatan trip.

1994 Dec. 08 Pauline sees Dr. Fletcher, he does biopsy, and chest x-ray. We cancel Yucatan trip.

1994 Dec. 13 Pauline has chemotherapy at OHSU for recurrence of knee tumor. Discharged on Dec. 17.

1994 Dec. 21 To Depoe Bay, stay at "Gracie's Landing" for our anniversary.

1994 Dec. 23 – Jan. 3 Mark and Debra go to central Mexico and Veracruz.

1994 Dec. 30 We take Pauline to OHSU, she's admitted at 8:00 a.m. for leg tumor surgery.
