1985 January We plan a winter vacation in Mazatlan, Mexico with Knoches and Armentrouts.
At some point, Roger Halliday sells the bus business on Avalon. They continue to live on Avalon, Catalina Island, but also have a mobile home in Huntington Beach, CA. Roger goes back to work at Douglas, stays at the Huntington Beach place during the week, and goes back to Catalina on weekends.
1985 Feb. 24 Mark comes from Austin to "housesit" while we are gone. Probably also in Utah on business.
1985 Feb. 25 We leave for Mazatlan. Leave our heavy winter coats in the car and ask Mark to bring them back when he picks us up. Snowing and COLD in Utah. Pleasant in Mazatlan, but unheated pool at hotel is too cold for swimming. Stayed at "The Inn at Mazatlan."
1985 Mar. 04 Return from Mazatlan.
1985 Mar. 15 We attend Tricia Johnston's wedding to Al Price.
1985 Mar. 30 We go to Woodburn on emergency trip--Al Kemmerich in Salem Hospital. (Surgery?)
1985 March Sometime in March (?) Glenn was through at Univac. Went on disability for two months (March & April?), then company denied disability, so he resigned.
1985 April 03 Al discharged from hospital, back home in Woodburn. We look at homes in Salemtowne, adult retirement community in West Salem, find a home on the bluff on Winslow Way that we really like. Great view of the fields to the east. Has a lower level, so would have more room for furniture, storage, etc. Realtor is Aileen Williams, who recently remarried. This house was her former home.
1985 April 04 We go to Redding, stay at a nearby motel and visit/help Hallidays for three days, then return to Salt Lake, mulling over the Salemtowne house all the way back. Irl is keeping Noma at home now. He has hired local women to stay with Noma around the clock.
1985 April 11 Al Kemmerich has chest pain, back at Salem Hospital. We call Aileen Rinehart Williams and make offer on her home at 3082 Winslow Way NW. We offer $95,000 and Aileen accepts it. Closing to be on July 1.
1985 April 04 - 14 Mark comes. He goes on a river trip on the "Dirty Devil" river.
1985 April 18 We list our Brighton Place house with "Gump & Ayers," agent: Dan Lawler. He advises turning garden area into lawn.
1985 April 24 Sod grass delivered, to cover garden area. We interview moving companies. Aaack! We have to PAY for this move ourselves!
1985 April 28 The "Chakrabarti's" make offer on house. Our counter offer is accepted on April 30.
1985 April 30 Karen moved to new place in Seattle. (3516 NE 113th, Seattle, WA ?)
1985 May 03 Mark went to New York. Stayed with friend of Nancy Lilly's, Becky Ford."
1985 May 05 Mark left for scuba diving trip to Bonaire and Curacao.
We are busy sorting out "stuff" and having various charities pick up "stuff." We learn we cannot move up our move-in date for Salemtowne house--a state senator, "Senator Timm" from Eastern Oregon is renting it and won't leave until the State legislature session ends. We find a house in Senior Estates, Woodburn to rent until July 1.
1985 May 12 Mark goes to New York City, visits his college friends, Rob & Katy Melich in Clinton, New Jersey.
1985 May 16 Glenn's group at Univac has lunch for him at the "Salt City Jail." Other goodbye lunches, dinners.
1985 May 26 Barbara cuts her finger deeply while chopping rhubarb for a pie.
1985 May 29 Mark leaves for trip to Hungary and Czechoslovakia, including the High Tatra Mountains and Prague. Conference in Budapest.
1985 May 30 North American Van Lines loads all our "stuff" for move to Salem. We stay overnight with Knoches.
1985 May 31 We have the closing on Brighton Place house and head for Salem, Oregon in the Tercel and the Datsun. We carry the china, silver and other valuables with us. We have two CB units in the cars and easily stick together along I-84. Stay overnight in Burley. Moving van costs: $2,962.75. Total weight: 11,500 lbs.
1985 June 02 We arrive at Kemmerichs in Woodburn. Al has his flag flying out front to welcome us!
1985 June 03 Moving van arrives. We squeeze all 11,500 pounds into a little house in Senior Estates, Woodburn. ( 1553 Walton Way, Woodburn.) Like living in a storage unit! Senator Timm won't be out of the Salemtowne house until June 30.
1985 June 10 Karen defends her thesis and is granted a Masters Degree in Fisheries Biology (correct name?)
1985 June 13 We find a new family physician via a referral for Barbara to a urologist, Dr. Elmgren, in Salem. He suggests Loring Winthrop at the Salem Clinic.
1985 June 15 We go to see Irl and Noma in Redding. Help them buy a hide-a-bed couch for living room, so there will be sleeping space for visitors.
1985 June 16 Mark returns to Austin.
1985 June 22 We go to Eugene for Hal Jole's retirement party. He has been both a teacher and principal in the Eugene school system for many years.
1985 June 28 We close on the Salemtowne house. Karen leaves for Alaska and a Bering Sea cruise.
1985 June 30 We take possession of the Salemtowne house.
1985 July We start exploring Oregon, going to Santiam Pass, Cape Kiwanda, etc.
1985 July 05 Lile Co. moves our "stuff" to the Salemtowne house. Borrowed Noel's pickup for some of the miscellaneous moving.
1985 July 08 Played golf at Salemtowne for the first time.
1985 July 10 Returned Noel's truck went to Trillium Lake near Mt. Hood with Betty, Nicole & Jason.
1985 July 17 Picked Marionberries with Kemmerichs near Woodburn.
1985 July 18 We took a trip to Bend, and drove the "Century Drive" highway into the Cascades west of Bend.
1985 July 30 The Knoches came for a visit.
1985 Aug. 01 We celebrate Al Kemmerich's 82nd birthday at our home, inviting several of my Kemmerich cousins: Delphine & Cletus Woods, Carole & Larry, George & Ceal Stupfel, plus Noel & Betty.
1985 Aug. 04 We attend the "Family Picnic" at Benson Park, near Multnomah Falls, then drive to the Spring Creek hatchery, Underwood, where Al Kemmerich discusses the hatchery's history with the current superintendent.
1985 Aug. 06 We go to Newport overnight.
1985 Aug. 08 Hal & Dorris Jole come for a visit.
1985 Aug. 18 Karen returns from the Bering Sea cruise.
1985 Aug. 21 Mark arrives. He is enroute to Asia, going to: Japan, Manila, Australia & New Zealand. Expects to be back in 2 months. He also did a river trip in Desolation Canyon in Utah before coming to Oregon.
1985 Aug. 23 Karen comes down; we have a family reunion at Woodburn. She brings her cat, "Kanchi" to stay with us while she is in Nepal for several months.
1985 Aug. 25 Mark leaves for Honolulu.
1985 Aug. 29 We attend the Oregon State Fair.
1985 Sept. 05 Karen leaves for Nepal. Will work as an advisor with Peace Corps.
1985 Sept. We take Al & Pauline to White Salmon, WA to attend the annual Fisheries picnic at Harlan Johnson's home. We visit Barbara's WU roommate, Virginia Wilson Sheppard in Hood River.
Glenn joins the Salemtowne "Friars Club" and we start helping serve pancake breakfast on one Sunday a month. We visit the Joles in Eugene for dinner; Don & Eleanor Roberts come to see us.
1985 Sept. 16 We attend our first Native Plant Society of Oregon Salem chapter meeting at the First Methodist Church.
1985 Sept. Vina Hudson & Ivel Lortz, Glenn's aunts, come to see us, enroute to Yachats for their coast vacation.
1985 Sept. 18 We drive to Spokane with Kemmerichs to see Pauline's sister & brother-in-law, Tudy and Poly Dameron.
1985 Sept. 21 Karen is in Bhaktapur, near Kathmandu. New Peace Corps volunteers arrive.
1985 Sept. 22 Mark returns to Los Angeles after his Asian trip.
1985 Sept. 24 We go to see Hallidays in Redding, via the Oregon coast. Sept. 26 Noma has another stroke, but does little additional damage.
1985 Sept. 30 We visit Henk and Adien Bezemer in their new retirement home in "Pine Grove" near Jackson, in the Sierra foothills, then return to Salem via Redding and another visit with Hallidays.
1985 October Barbara starts attending the Salemtowne bi-weekly exercise class. We attend "Man of La Mancha" at the local "little theater"--the Pentacle Theater.
1985 Oct. 04 - 10 Mark is in Washington, D.C.
1985 Oct. 07 We have a driveway full of firewood--to feed the wood stove downstairs. Glenn hauls it all down under the deck and stacks it up. We start attending the Tuesday might Salemtowne pinochle games.
1985 Oct. 17 We drive to Kennewick to see Glenn's relatives: Aunt Audrey Altrogge, her daughter & son-in-law, Alice & Bob Rupp, Ivel & Bill Lortz, Vina and Ken Hudson and Nova Walsh. Visit the East Benton County Historical Museum where many of Glenn's relatives volunteer--especially Vina, and Orvel & Doris Terril. See exhibits contributed by them. Orvel is a skilled woodworker and made the room display backdrops.
1985 Oct. 23 We drive with Kemmerichs to Seattle and Sedro-Woolley, visiting Julius Kemmerich's widow, Margaret, at her retirement apartment in Redmond.
1985 Oct. 28 Noma is moved back to the Crestwood Convalescent Home nursing home in Redding.
1985 October Barbara starts using the computers at the Salem Public Library--available free in one-hour increments.
1985 Nov. 13 We visit Hallidays in Redding, bringing Noma home for the day.
1985 Nov. 28 We host Thanksgiving dinner with Al & Pauline, Noel, Betty & kids here. Starts a long-standing tradition: Thanksgiving at Glenn and Barb's, Christmas at Noel and Betty's.
1985 Dec. 03 Barbara helps decorate Salemtowne Towne Hall complex for Christmas.
1985 Dec. 07 Jason & Nicole come for an overnight and we bake & decorate Christmas cookies.
1985 Dec. 22 For our 35th anniversary, got a new diamond wedding band, had it attached to Barbara's engagement ring.
1985 Dec. 24 Mark to San Francisco through New Year's. Visiting Lara (?)
1985 Dec. 25 Christmas dinner at Noel's.
1986 Jan. 06 Al Kemmerich had eye surgery. Probably related to his glaucoma.

1986 Jan. 22 Glenn starts watercolor class at Salem Senior Center.
1986 Jan. 23 We attend funeral for Barbara's cousin, Delphine Stupfel Woods.
1986 Jan. 28 Karen returns to Seattle from Nepal. She visited both of her posts, Bichour and Thonje while in Nepal. Escorted new PC volunteers to their posts.
1986 Jan. 31 We stay at the Holiday Surf Lodge in Depoe Bay, OR with the Joles.
1986 Feb. 06 Karen comes down from Seattle, via Amtrak. We sell her the Datsun (?)
1986 Feb. 08 We head for Borrego Springs, CA, via: Redding, Ashenfelters ( Grass Valley ), Bezemers, arriving at the Roadrunner Club on Feb. 15.
1986 Feb. 17 Knoches come for overnight visit at Roadrunner Club with us.
1986 Feb. 20 We go to the Date Festival in Indio, visit Ray & Helen Hiatt (Bonnie Hiatt Halliday's parents) at their winter home in Thousand Palms, CA.
Enjoyed various hikes in Anza-Borrego St. Park. To: Yaqui Pass Cactus Loop, Palm Canyon, Henderson Road, Galleta Meadows, Yaqui Well & Culp Valley. Enjoyed some sunsets from the Ram Country Club deck with a margarita in our hands.
1986 Feb. 27 Took overnight trip to Encinitas, visited Ralph Berg (Glenn's friend from LA Univac days). Also saw the Quail Botanical Gardens at Torrey Pines. We have visitors: Roger & Bonnie Halliday, and Bezemers.
1986 Mar. 08 We leave Borrego Springs, stay overnight with Guenzis (Betty K's parents) in Yuma, on to Tucson and Green Valley, El Paso, Study Butte & Terlingua, near Big Bend Nat. Park, Fredericksburg, Pedernales Falls and arrive at Mark's home on March 22. The blue bonnets are in full bloom. Went to McKinney Falls. Mark ran in the annual Austin Race. We visited Mark and David's office for "Sorex."
1986 Mar. 26 We drive to Dallas, stay with Fernando & Anita Aguilar in Irving, TX. Head back west, via: Pecos, Safford, AZ, Glendale, AZ where we visit Glenn's cousin, Leah & husband Bob Johnson at their winter mobile home in Apache Junction. On to Tehachapi, Pinnacles Nat. Monument, San Jose, and Redding.
1986 March Noel & Betty give us two blueberry bushes as a housewarming present.
1986 April 03 Arrived home in Salemtowne, after logging 7,400 miles.
1986 April 10 All rested up (!!) we took Kemmerichs to Whale Cove for lunch.
1986 April 19 We started attending the monthly meetings of the Am. Cancer Soc. Laryngectomy group in Portland.
1986 April 24 We meet with our new lawyer, Clark Williams & he draws up wills for us. Glenn attends an IBM computer users meeting.
1986 April 25 Barbara gets her first notice of jury duty. NOT in Salem, but 18 miles away in the Polk County seat of Dallas.
We start going on Native Plant Soc. Field trips to: Eagle Creek, Columbia Gorge; Sand Lake
1986 May 07 Irl Halliday drives up for his Willamette Univ. 60th class reunion.
1986 May 10 Candie Halliday Farley & husband Dale come down to see Irl, and brings their little son, Tyson.
1986 May 14 Paul & Reba Ashenfelter visit overnight.
1986 May 18 We leave for Redding. Irl lists his home for sale and advertises some furniture for sale.
1986 May 26 We joined Kemmerichs in visiting the Mt. Angel cemetery and decorating the graves of family members buried there, including: August & Barbara Kemmerich, and their children: Mark, Anna, and Katherine.
1986 May 30 Mark leaves for Dusseldorf, Germany.
1986 May 31 We pick up our first personal computer—a "Leading Edge" which probably had all of 64 kilobytes of data storage!
In between, or during our trips to Redding, we also manage to see: Rowena Summit & the Dalles, Mt. Hood, Smith Rocks, and the Lava Caves near Bend, Salt Creek Falls, Cascade Head, and Cape Meares.
1986 June 01 Karen leaves on a research cruise in Bering Sea.
1986 June 06 We go with the Salemtowne Travel Club by bus to Vancouver, Canada to attend the "Expo 86" World's Fair.
1986 June 24 We drive to Redding, help Irl put on a garage sale.
1986 June 29 We return to Salem, and Mark returns from Europe.
1986 July Barbara picks raspberries and Marionberries near Woodburn. Barbara again on jury duty.
1986 July 19 We attend our first Salem Art Festival with Betty. Held in Bush Pasture Park.
1986 July 21 Karen returns from Alaskan cruise.
1986 July 24 Glenn entered some flower photos in the State Fair. Got a ribbon for his Scarlet Fritillary.
1986 July 27 We take a 3-day trip to Crater Lake, staying in a cabin, probably soon to fall off its perch near the Crater Lake Lodge.
1986 July 30 Barbara attends her Chi Omega Nu Delta chapter sorority reunion in Portland, at Jean Garrett's home.
1986 Aug. 01 08-01 Mark & Karen both arrive. We all attend the annual family picnic the next day at Benson St. Park.
1986 Aug. 15 We go up to "Omnitek" in Beaverton for computer classes.
1986 Aug. 06 Mark leaves for Butte, MT & Yellowstone (?)
1986 August Harvest time! Barbara picks red Gravensteins, makes applesauce.
1986 Aug. 12 Barb & Al join Al's friends, the Coxes and Johnsons, and we all go to the huckleberry fields near Mt. St. Helens.
1986 Aug. 16 Jason & Nicole stay overnight; we take them to the " Enchanted Forest" near Salem.
1986 Aug. 20 We take our tent to South Beach St. Park near Newport and camp with the Joles. (They have a trailer).
1986 August We work with the Salem chapter of the Am. Cancer Society.
1986 Sept. 02 Kemmerich relatives from Germany come to visit, staying with us and with Noel & Betty. They are Bruno Kemmerich's niece (Iris Kemmerich Menzel & husband Stephan), and Hedwig Kemmerich Hamann's son, Jurgen. They visit other Kemmerich relatives in the area.
1986 Sept. 04 Irl gets an offer on his house.
1986 Sept. 07 We take bus trip to Reno. Visit the Roberts & the Paulls at the Nugget.
1986 Sept. 09 Mark goes to Salt Lake City.
1986 September More visitors: the Bezemers come and we visit wineries along Hwy 99. Barbara & Howard Olson (neighbors in Encino years before) also visit.
1986 Sept. 17 We go to Redding. Irl selects a moving company and signs papers for the house sale.
1986 Sept. 24 Barbara is referred to Dr. Strum, an orthopedic surgeon for persistent knee pain.
1986 Sept. 27 We drive Kemmerichs to Burlington, WA and have lunch with Karen in Seattle.
1986 Sept. 29 We check out " Cascade Park" retirement apartments (for Irl) and French Prairie Nursing Home (for Noma) in Woodburn.
1986 Oct. 02 We go to Redding and help Irl with a second garage sale. Irl and Noma have a last visit with their doctors, and their church gives them a farewell party. We arrange that one of the aides from Crestwood will accompany us to Salem to help with Noma. We pack up their remaining goods and return to Salem the next day.
1986 Oct. 12 We return to Redding for final preparations for the move.
1986 Oct. 15 Halliday's house sale closes and we drive to Salem. Irl drives his car and Noma and the aide drive with us. Irl stays overnight with us and moves into his apartment at Cascade Park the next day.
1986 Oct. 18 We return to Redding, pick up Noma and the aide at Crestwood the next day and drive back to Salemtowne. Noma moves into French Prairie the next day.
1986 Nov. 15 Karen & friend "Phil" stop in overnight, enroute to Sacramento. Karen goes on to Yosemite Park.
1986 November Barbara joins the Travel Club Board as secretary.
1986 Nov. 22 Mark leaves Austin for Salt City, via Big Bend N. Park.
1986 Nov. 26 Karen returns from Calif. trip, and stays for Thanksgiving. Hallidays, Noel & Betty & Kemmerichs also join us. Mark goes to see Austin Sam, in Navajo land & spends Thanksgiving with him.
1986 December Noel & Betty find a new kitty for us, "Pluto."
1986 Dec. 13 Jason & Nicole come down, we take them to the "Nutcracker" ballet at Willamette.
1986 Dec. 23 Mark flies to Portland to spend Christmas with us.
1986 Dec. 28 Mark is working in Salt Lake City in December and January. Staying in an apartment at 175 Canyon Rd.
1987 Jan. 06 Irl takes Oregon drivers license exam—passes.
1987 Jan. 25 Irl comes down to share the Super Bowl game with Glenn.
1987 Feb. 01 Karen moved into a house with Wendy at 2103 N. 38th, Seattle. Housemate: Wendy.
1987 Feb. 09 We leave for six weeks at the Roadrunner Club in Borrego Springs. $330. Enroute, we stay in the Wine Country and have dinner with Lara in San Rafael, go to Bezemers, visit old Canoga Park neighbors, Bob & Joan Owens in Simi Valley, and spend HOURS on the LA freeways, driving to Roger's home in Huntington Beach.
1987 Feb. 15 We arrive at Borrego Springs, and Bill & Maxine Paull greet us. They are staying in their motor home at the state park. Hikes in the park included: Hellhole Canyon, Yaqui Wells, an "owl prowl," Split Mt., Font's Point, Indian Canyon. Visitors: Ashenfelters, Bezemers, Ralph & Barbara Berg, Guenzi's, Roger & Bonnie.
1987 Feb. 14 Karen goes on a 3-day skiing trip in WA Cascades Mts.
1987 Mar. 01 We go to San Diego overnight, tour "Sea World."
1987 Mar. 09 Karen goes on a Hydro-Acoustic survey, aboard the "Miller Freeman" ship in the Bering Sea.
1987 Mar. 13 Bezemers arrive. We hike in Palm Canyon and also go to Mexicali, Mexico for the day.
1987 Mar. 17 Ralph & Barbara Berg stay overnight. They are traumatized by the road down the mountainside from Julian, and take the LONG way home!
1987 Mar. 18 Pauline Kemmerich's next youngest sister, Mildred ("Tudy") Dameron dies.
1987 Mar. 20 Mark goes to Moab. Also does "flight-skiing trip" via Bryce-Grand Canyon-Zion with Utah friends in friend's plane.
1987 Mar. 28 Roger & Bonnie come for the weekend.
1987 Mar. 31 Karen returns from the Bering Sea survey.
1987 April 01 We leave Roadrunner Club and drive to Green Valley. We stay with Knoches who have retired to Green Valley. They are living at: 1149 Circulo del Norte. We spend a day in Nogales, Mexico.
1987 April 04 We start our return to Salemtowne, visiting Bob & Leah Johnson in Apache Junction, Laughlin, NV, San Simeon (touring Hearst Castle), Monterey, Inverness, Ft. Bragg, & Crescent City enroute.
1987 Mar. 06-14 Mark in Cozumel, Mexico for diving. Check this with Mark.
1987 April 14 Barbara starts golf lessons with other Salemtowne women.
1987 April 22 We drive to Kennewick with Irl. Visit his sister, Audrey Altrogge for the last time. Also visit: Bruce & Lois Vance (Glenn's cousin), Bob & Alice Rupp, Glenn's Terril aunts: Ivel Lortz & Nova Walsh. We stop in Bickleton, WA on way back to see the bluebird nest boxes.
We also keep busy with our local activities: Travel Club, Native Plant Soc. Meetings & hikes, Cancer Society, visiting Irl & Noma, the Kemmerichs, Noel & Betty and our new doctors and dentist. Barbara adds a new duty: taking minutes at the Salemtowne Board meetings, once a month, on Thursday morning, in the Farm House.
1987 May 07-21 Mark to Dominican Republic and Haiti. In Haiti he visits locales from book about " Serpent/Rainbow Voodoo"
1987 May 08 We buy a Colt " Vista" 4WD at Roberson's for $13,625.
1987 May 09 We go to Seattle to visit Karen. Visit " Gasworks Park" near her home. See Don & Eleanor Roberts at their apartment in Tacoma, WA, near daughter Dorothy (DeeDee)
1987 May 13 Bob & Leah Johnson stop to see Irl & Noma enroute to their summer home near Mt. Rainier.
1987 May 16 We attend our WU Class of '52 35th Reunion at Willamette. Classmate Don Irwin comes back to the house afterwards.
1987 May 17 Noel returns from one of his many trips to an Air Force Base in Florida with tasty shrimp, and he hosts a shrimp barbecue.
1987 May 19 We take Irl & Noma to see the Schreiner Iris Gardens at Brooks.
1987 May 20 We have a trailer hitch put on the Colt and pick up a new Coleman tent trailer in Portland. (Will we never learn that we are not RV'rs??)
1987 May 26 We sell the Toyota Tercel for $4900.
1987 May 27 We see a hidden part of Oregon with the Native Plant Society—the Big Summit Prairie in the Ochoco Mts. East of Prineville.

1987 June 09 We go to Monmouth to visit Barb's sorority sister, LaFyrne, and husband Gordon Pratt. Tour Alaska Museum.

Having a great time in Kenya. We have just finished the cycling part of the tour, and are back in Nairobi, getting ready to start on a series of drives through the big game parks. It’s a really beautiful country, with a wonderful variety of habitat in a small area. We’ve been seeing lots of beautiful tropical birds and plants already. See you in a few weeks. Love, Karen

1987 Aug. 02 Mark back to Austin from Salt Lake City. Anita and Carlos Aguilar come to the Northwest, first to Kennewick, then Lois Vance joins them and they drive down to see us and Irl and Noma. Carlos gives us all a guitar concert at Noma's nursing home in Woodburn.

1987 September Sometime during the month, a German cousin, Bruno Kemmerich, visits Mark in Austin, as part of his tour of the US with son Uli and nephew Jurgen Hamann. Earlier they visited the Willamette Valley, and Yakima to visit Kemmerich relatives. We missed them, being away on a trip. Mark takes Bruno to revisit Fort Hood, where he was once a prisoner of war, during WWII. Bruno remarks to Mark that "the food was wonderful."
1987 Oct. 03 We go to Seattle to visit Karen, see her new horse, and also visit Julius' widow, Margaret. See: Seattle Center, Aquarium.
1987 Oct. 10 Mark returns to Austin from Toronto. Leaves next day for annual Exploration Conference in New Orleans.
1987 Oct. 13 Barbara takes a Chemeketa Community College genealogy class at Salemtowne, at very cheap "senior" tuition.
1987 Oct. 18 Irl stays overnight with us, is admitted to Salem Hospital next day by Dr. Bailly. Trying drug therapy to help Irl's increasingly severe congestive heart failure.
1987 Oct. 22 Al Kemmerich's older brother, John, dies.

1987 Nov. 22 Irl's funeral is held at the Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Woodburn. Noma, Leslie, Roger & Bonnie, their daughter Candie & family, Terry & Gloria, and Terry's daughter, Stephanie, Kemmerichs, Mark and Karen and Barbara's cousin, Marcella & husband Florin Zielinski attend, among others, including some of Irl's friends from Cascade Park apartments.

1987 Barbara mails out the first Chi Omega newsletter. She took on the job of writing an annual newsletter, with the help of our computer.
1987 Dec. 06 We join the Salemtowne Travel club for Warren Ling's annual Reno Christmas bus trip. Some years, as many as 13 busses travel together to Reno. We stay at the Hilton and have a wonderful banquet there, with a visit by Santa Claus and gifts for all.
1987 Dec. 07 Mark leaves for Mexico City. He later goes to Spanish language school in Cuernavaca.
1987 Dec. 21 Barbara is appointed substitute trip leader for Christmas Lights bus tour to Portland.

1988 May 18 We visit Karen in Seattle, driving past my former home there: at 3811 41st. NE. Looks great! Go to Suzallo Library, at UW; copy early Skagit History which includes von Pressentin trip over Cascade Pass. Librarian is nephew of "Dolly," second wife of my uncle, Charles Pressentin!! Karen takes us to the Seattle Opera for "Die Fledermaus."

1988 Aug. 21 Mark comes for a visit, as part of his trip to Alaska and the Kenai Fjords. We go with Mark to Clear Lake, with tent trailer, camping at Coldwater Cove. We hike ALL the way around the lake, and are pooped after 5-6 mile hike!

1988 Sept. 17 Our trip to Europe starts. We fly on American Airlines to Dallas, TX, with our plane going WAY out of its way to avoid the storms and tornadoes spawned by Hurricane Gilbert which had just wreaked havoc on the Yucatan & Mexico. We stay overnight with Fernando & Anita Aguilar at their apartment in Irving. Also visit with their son, Carlos, & his wife, Gail, who live nearby.
1988 Sept. 18 Anita gives us a tour of Ft. Worth/Dallas and we go to a Mexico exhibit at the Dallas art museum. We leave Dallas in the late afternoon.
1988 Sept. 19 We arrive at Gatwick airport about 9 a.m. and are shepherded into London by a Globus guide. Stayed at the Hilton International Olympia Hotel. Got a call from Barbara's cousin, Marcella Zielinski. She and husband, Florin, were on the other side of London, and getting ready for THEIR tour of the British Isles.
1988 Sept. 20 A day in London, with a morning tour of the basic sights—Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, changing of the Guard. On our own in the afternoon, we rode a double-decker bus to the British Museum.
1988 Sept. 21 – Oct. 04 Off we go, to see more of Europe. Our stops: Brussels, Amsterdam, Heidelberg, Munich, Vienna, Venice, Stresa (In the Italian Lake District), Zermatt, & Lausanne, Switzerland, Paris and back to London.
1988 Oct. 04 We return to Salemtowne. Barb is still coughing—the result of the bad cold she caught in Amsterdam and probably gave to everyone on our bus! She also has painful ear problem, with collapsed Eustachian tubes, due to combination of congestion in her head and airplane pressure changes. Cost of bus tour: $2,699 for two. With optional tours, film, etc. total cost of the trip was $3,369. Air transportation was a gift from Mark.

1989 Jan. 25 Noma has her left leg amputated above the knee at Salem Hospital, Dr. Wilson surgeon. Poor circulation in her left leg, caused by her strokes, resulted in gangrene in her left foot. Roger and Bonnie come to see Noma.

Revelstoke, Revelstoke Dam; Keystone Standard Basin in Selkirks; Glacier Park (in B.C.), Oroville, WA seeing "Old Molson" pioneer park; through Okanogan Valley, to Kennewick for Terril family reunion where Karen joins us.
1989 Aug. 19 Mark leaves for Chile & Argentina.
1989 Aug. 22 Doylestown friends, Gordon & Shirley Davis visit us. Now living in Florida.
1989 Aug. 31 Jason & Nicole spend a couple nights with us; we take them to the State Fair.
1989 Sept. 04 Mark returns to Austin from South America.

1989 Sept. 10 – 13 We go on a bus trip to Reno with Travel Club, staying at the Comstock Hotel.

1989 Oct. 04 Glenn enrolls in a watercolor class at the Senior Center.

1989 Oct. 16 Pauline Kemmerich had a knee cyst removed at Salem Hospital. Turned out to be a malignant tumor. Dr. Stevens thought he "got it all." Turned out to be wrong. Tumor recurred one year later.
1989 Oct. 17 A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit the Bay Area just before the 3rd game of the World Series at Candlestick Park—worst earthquake since 1906. We got a closer look at the aftermath, by watching an Oakland, CA TV station on our new cable TV.
1989 Oct, 19 Glenn gets called for jury duty.
1989 Oct. 27 - 30 We visit Karen in Prosser, going on to Kennewick seeing: Orvel & Doris Terril, Audrey Altrogge, and Lois Vance. Enroute home we stop at the Muirhead Cannery in The Dalles and pick up some sample cans of their fruit. They make customers out of us and Kemmerichs from that time on!

1989 Nov. 06 Barbara takes minutes for the Salemtowne annual meeting.
1989 Nov. 11 Cheryl Halliday re-marries for third time, to John Good, in Reno.
1989 Nov. 17 Mark leaves for Africa. Goes first to Uganda: Kampala-Entebbe-Rift Valley., then on to Ethiopia: Addis-Harrar- Blue Nile Falls.
1989 Nov. 20 Terry & Gloria come to see Noma, and us.
1989 Nov. 22 One, or both of us bought long term care insurance policies.
Al Kemmerich's eyesight is no longer too good. He starts using the State Library's "talking books."
1989 Dec. 09 Mark returns from Africa. After Ethiopia, he went rafting on the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe, then to South Africa: Durban-Capetown-Kimberly Mine Tour.
1989 Dec. 11 Down to Depoe Bay, & Newport, staying at the Holiday Surf Lodge.
1989 Dec. 23 Karen comes for Christmas.
1989 Dec. 24 Candie & Dale Farley come to see Noma at French Prairie. With Karen, we all go to lunch with Noma.
