1980 At sometime, (Spring?) Mark buys his first new car—a CJ-7 Jeep.

1980 Jan. 12 Karen's Peace Corps service in Nepal ends. She makes plans to go back to the Univ. of Utah.

1980 Jan. 17 Joanne Marinovich flies back home to Australia.

1980 February (Spring) Karen and fellow Peace Corps volunteer "Bev" travel home through Europe. When they get to the Greek islands they don't want to leave.

1980 Feb. 26 We mail Karen an American Youth Hostel card & Eurail Pass, to use in Europe.

1980 Feb. 19 Glenn off to Blue Bell, PA on business. Mark does some serious skiing in the Utah Mts.

1980 March Barbara is sent to Reno to help with a Learning Resources Conference. Glenn flies over with her; Irl & Noma take the bus from Redding to Reno. We all stay at the Circus Circus. Also visit Don & Eleanor Roberts.

1980 Mar. 22 "Ingrid" arrives. She and Mark drive to Fish Springs and other sites in the western Utah desert and do a magnetic survey.

1980 Mar. 28 Barbara is sent to Portland for another VA Continuing Education conference. Stays at the Hilton, & after the conference, goes to Kemmerichs at Woodburn.

1980 April 3 Al Kemmerich has prostate surgery at Salem Hospital.

1980 April 12 Karen winds up her Peace Corps stint in Nepal with a trek to Mt. Everest with friend & PC volunteer "Bev." They fly to Greece a few days later, and spend a month in Europe before returning to the USA.

1980 April 13 Mark drives his Jeep (or flies??) to Toronto, Canada. Working with "Phoenix Geophysics Ltd., Willowdale, Ontario. Spends enough time in Utah to go to "the Maze" and " Dirty Devil River "

1980 April 18 Glenn & Barbara take trip to Green Valley, AZ, via Las Vegas and Page, AZ & Zion Park on return.

1980 April 29 Barbara goes to another VACE (continuing education) conference with Learning Resources people--to St. Louis, MO.

1980 May Glenn goes to Irvine, CA on business trip. Karen comes back from Europe.When she returns, she has to get a driver's license and we only have stick shift cars! But, she passes the test.

1980 May 21 Glenn's 25th anniversary with Univac is marked with a luncheon at the Hidden Valley Country Club.

1980 May 30 Mark flies back from Toronto.

1980 1980 June 01 Mark flies to Alaska and spends the month working in the Aleutians on Unga Island and Iliamna. Working for: Resources Assoc. of Alaska, Fairbanks.

1980 June 07 Glenn & Barbara have 3-day trip to Bottle Hollow (Duchene Indian resort) and Dinosaur Monument.

1980 July 07 We buy a "3-man" mountain tent--bright yellow.

1980 July 09 "Pam McHugh" from Australia comes to visit. Mark and Karen are here. Pam later marries Mark's friend, Paul Barbary from London drama school.

1980 July 13 Pam leaves, continuing her solo tour of the USA, and Mark leaves again for Toronto

1980 July 24 Glenn, Barbara & Karen take the new tent to the Ruby Mts. near Elko, NV.

1980 Aug. 03 Karen's friend, Harold Woods and wife Janet visit for a couple days. Later, Karen's friends, Art & Jen Brooks & children visit.

1980 Aug. 08 Bob Lilly retires from the Air Force and they move back to Salt Lake, from Little Rock, with a second child--Frank, about 1 year old. They stay with us for a couple weeks. Later, they buy a home on Brighton Way a couple blocks from us.

1980 Aug. 08 Karen moves into an apartment near the Univ. of Utah, and enrolls at the Univ.

1980 Aug. 25 Mark takes a 2-week holiday in Maine, around Bar Harbor, before returning to Toronto. He acquires a taste for lobster.

1980 Aug. 30 Glenn started laying brick walks through the vegetable garden area. Barb helps. We both are glad to go back to work after the tough working weekends.

1980 Sept. 18 Kemmerichs come for their fall visit.

1980 Oct. (?) Karen is hired by the Nat. Marine Fisheries Svc. in Seattle and is based at their Montlake Blvd. office. She moves to Seattle.

1980 Oct. 11 Glenn & Barbara leave for trip to: Sonoma, Ft. Bragg, and Redding. Return to Salt Lake on Oct. 19.

1980 Nov. 14 Glenn represents WU at the inauguration of a new president of BYU. Marches in the procession in cap and gown, right behind Yale!! Shows how old a university Willamette is.

1980 Nov. Mark leaves Quebec, has another job in Washington, D.C. Stays in Reston, VA. Still working for Phoenix Geophysics.

1980 Dec. 19 Mark returns to Toronto for more work, then on vacation to Jan. 5.

1980 Dec. 23 We fly to Portland, spend Christmas with Kemmerichs, Karen comes down from Seattle.

1981 Jan. 05 Mark is back at work in Reston, VA.

1981 Jan 19 Mark flies back to Salt Lake City.

We stay busy with work, going to ballet, working with Native Plant Society.

1981 Feb. 07 We fly to so. Calif. Stay with Bezemers, we all go to Disneyland. Visit with Pat Koupal Whitbeck. Rent a car, drive to Indio, visit with Hiatts and Bonnie, go on to "Hacienda del Sol" at Borrego Springs. Fly back to Salt Lake City from Orange Co. airport on Feb. 16.

1981 Feb. We buy our first combination video camera & video recorder, by RCA. Cost a LOT, and had no remote! Busy renting and viewing tapes.

1981 March Mark has job in Denver with Phoenix Geophysics; drives his Jeep over there.

1981 April 10 We spend a week in Green Valley, AZ with Knoches, and Bob & Jean Armentrout. Glenn and Allyn discover cable TV and the weather channel. They are transfixed. Go up Madera Canyon, return via Oak Creek Canyon, Page, and Zion Park.
Mark is working in New Mexico.

1981 April 24 Learning Resources moves out of Bldg. 12, a little house, and into the former hospital Theater.

1981 May 02 Isabelle Pepin arrives from Toronto ?? Quebec ?? Mark comes back from Colorado a few days later. Mark and Isabelle leave in the Jeep for grand Jeep/camping tour of the West.

1981 May 22 Kemmerichs broke with tradition, came to see us in May!

1981 June 10 Karen is sent to the Bering Sea for fisheries research on chartered fishing boat.

1981 June 16 Barbara gets shingles--from another Learning Resources employee whose kids have chicken pox and gave it to her. Grrrrr.

1981 June 17 Mark and Isabelle reach Redding, visit with Hallidays.

1981 June 20 Mark and Isabelle are in Ashland, OR for the wedding of Mark's friend, Chris.

1981 July 02 We join other Learning Resources people on a campout in "Christmas Meadows" in the Uintas.

1981 July 04 Mark & Isabelle are in Stanley, ID for a raucous 4th. They also do a river trip on the Salmon River.

1981 July Glenn & Barbara have nice hikes in the mountains. We go to " Secret Lake " in Albion Basin with the Knoches and their kids, Garrett and Karen.

1981 July 24 We leave on trip to Oregon, via: Farewell Bend, Sumpter, Anthony Lakes, meeting Mark & Isabelle at their campsite at Hurricane Creek, in the Wallowas. Karen meets us in LaGrande; we all stay at a motel in Enterprise. Go on hikes, and to top of Mt. Howard in tram. Mark & Isabelle backpack into the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Mark & Isabelle stay with Noel's. We stay with Kemmerichs.

1981 July 31 Al arranges for all of us to have formal family portrait made in Woodburn by "Stefani."

1981 Aug. 01 We all celebrate Al Kemmerich's 78th birthday at Noel's with a salmon barbecue.

1981 Aug. 02 We all go to the annual family picnic, at Benson Park, by Multnomah Falls.

1981 Oct. 16 Glenn & Barbara make a return trip to Green Valley for a week.
Mark goes to Hokkaido, Japan for geothermal-related survey.

1981 Nov. 01-05 Barbara goes to Washington, D.C. with boss Paul Smith for a conference. Has time to do various tourist trips, including visiting the Dept. of Interior and Karen's Peace Corp rep, Virgil Miedema at the State Dept.
Mark plays tourist in Japan, visiting Tokyo and Kyoto.

1981 Nov. 25 Glenn & Barbara fly to San Francisco, rent a car and drive to Redding to spend Thanksgiving with Irl & Noma.

1981 December Mark goes on to the Philippines for another "MT" survey job. Both Mark and Karen come for Christmas--and sessions with the dentists & eye doctors.

1981 Dec. 28 Mark has his wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Wall.

1982 January Mark did some backpacking in the San Rafael Swell area of southern Utah.
Barbara is now editor of the UT. Native Plant Society newsletter, called the "Sego Lily." She types up the newsletter on her own time at work, has it copied, and mails it.

1982 Feb. 01 -28 Mark worked in the Bay Area for "EM Surveys" in Berkeley.

1982 Mar. 02 Noma Halliday had carotid artery surgery for obstructed left carotid artery.

1982 Mar. 18 Eric Kuehl died. (One of the Yes Bay, AK group) We now are mailing out the "Sego Lily" newsletter of the UT Native Plant Society.
Mark returns to the Philippines, doing more surveys in remote areas. Also climbs a major Philippine peak. Stays in Philippines until June.

1982 May 01 – 10 Glenn & Barbara take wildflower trip along Highway 49 in the Sierra foothills, visiting: Auburn, Columbia, Yosemite, Jackson, then to Redding to see Hallidays.

1982 May 16 We join the Knoches to see Topaz Mt.

1982 May 26 Paul Barbary's parents arrive, doing motor home tour of the US. Mark arrives from Philippines a couple days later.

1982 June 04 Mark takes advantage of the huge gas barbecue Glenn bought (and built a house for) and throws a party for his friends.

1982 June 09 Mark goes on a Yampa River canoe trip. We take Nat.Plant Society field trips, leading many of them.

1982 July 02 - 11 We drive to Woodburn, Karen joins us and we take camping trip along WA coast, through Olympic Park.

1982 July 13 – Aug. 5 Karen on another Bering Sea trip

1982 July Mark returns to the Philippines.

1982 July 21 Barbarys returned and left for Australia, after logging an incredible number of miles in their motor home. They visited Kemmerichs at one point.

1982 July 21 Glenn had arthroscopic surgery on his (right?) knee.
Mark's Japanese "fliends," Yoko & Yoshiko Kawamoto, from Hokkaido, Japan, stay with us a couple days during their USA tour. They are so neat and tidy and traveling with the tiniest of packs, out of which they pull gifts for us!

1982 Aug. 05 Karen back from Bering Sea.

1982 Aug. 13 Mark finishes his survey job in the Philippines and embarks on a round-the-world trip: Hong Kong, Canton, and Peking.

1982 Aug. 21 Mark leaves Peking by train, headed for the USSR. In August he goes to: Irkutsk-Tashkent-Bokhara.

1982 Aug. 30 Glenn has neck x-rays to determine cause of severe pain in his left arm. Drs. suggest physical therapy, neck surgery as last resort. Therapy works!

1982 Sept. 01 Karen living in Camas, WA while doing salmon surveys. There until Dec. 30.
Mark in USSR, visits: Tbilisi- Yalta- Moscow

1982 Sept. 14 Mark in Leningrad, leaving soon for Helsinki.

1982 Sept. 23 We leave for trip to Yellowstone Park, staying at W.Yellowstone, then to Signal Mt. Lodge in the Tetons.

1982 October We see "Kismet" musical, later go to "Sweeney Todd" and the opera (have season tickets).
Mark meets Isabelle Pepin (in Switzerland ?) and they begin trip in Africa. First stop: Cairo, Egypt. At Aswan Dam, Isabelle sprains her ankle, and gets carried through much of Africa by Mark. They go on tour--by open-bed truck.

1982 Oct. 10 We take weekend trip to Wendover, explore area around it.

1982 November We are on a furniture-buying spree. Get new sectional sofa for living room, a bar and stools for the family room, and new mattress for our bed. Glenn put up wallpaper behind the bar and in kitchen.
Mark & Isabelle see: the Sudan, from Khartoum to Juba.

1982 December Mark & Isabelle reach Kenya, see: Nairobi to Mombassa. Isabelle stays in Mombassa; Mark goes back to the Philippines.

1982 Dec. 21 Barbara's Aunt Louise von Pressentin Ledbetter passed away in Arlington, WA from cancer.

1982 Dec. 22 – Jan. 01 We go to Green Valley for Christmas with Karen and the Knoches. Stay in "casitas" near the Safeway shopping mall. Karen flies to and from Tucson back to Seattle.

1982 Dec. 30 We call Mark in Manila.  

1983 January Mark goes to Australia. He stays with Paul Barbary in Canterbury, New South Wales. Then visits Tasmania.
Karen working part-time at NW & Alaska fisheries, while going to UW for a Master's in Fishery Biology.

1983 Jan. 15 Barb turns over Sego Lily editor job to Jennifer Harrington.

1983 February Mark is in: Adelaide, Sydney, and Broken Hill.

1983 Mar. 14 Mark is planning ahead for future travel to New Zealand, he asks for ski equipment to be sent to him by sea mail. Now visiting: Roxby Downs-Coober Peedy

1983 Mar. 15 Karen and Barbara Inglin fly over to Salt Lake. They take the Datsun on a spring break trip down to Canyonlands, where they camp and shiver. They get back to our house just ahead of a huge spring snow storm.

1983 Mar. 24 Glenn develops terrible stomach pain. Has various tests which determine it is his gall bladder acting up. We cancel a planned trip to the Calif. coast.

1983 Mar. 26 Karen and Barbara Inglin return to Seattle.

1983 April 02 Karen moves to a new place: 907 23rd Ave. E. in Seattle. Housemates: Rosemary O'Brien, Shawn Turgesoy, and Mark Muenstar.

1983 April 07 Glenn has gall bladder surgery at Holy Cross Hospital, Dr. Halvorsen, the surgeon.

1983 April 09 Mark calls from Adelaide, Australia.

1983 April 13 Glenn discharged from the hospital, Mark calls from Adelaide. Mark is seeing more of Australia : Ayers Rock- Olgas- Alice.

1983 May We go to Zion, Glenn feeling good enough to even hike up the Watchman Trail (albeit slowly).
We finally finish laying all the bricks for the patio! Last of the bricklaying project.

1983 May 6-8 Karen joins Al & Pauline Kemmerich and two Stupfel cousins, Mark and Agnes (their father, Norbert Stupfel) on a trip to Skagit River Valley. Al's brother, John, joined them in Sedro-Woolley. They visit: Kemmerich ranch and Pressentin ranch at Birdsview, Hamilton, WA cemetery where Barbara Kemmerich was originally buried, on up to Marblemount and Diablo Dam on Skagit River.

1983 May 14 We go to "Die Fledermaus" and get umbrella for the newly finished patio.
Mark goes to: Townsville- Cairns, Australia

1983 May 21 "Tony" and helper "Carl" start painting the exterior of the house.

1983 May 26 House painting is finished, cost: $750.

1983 June 08 Karen leaves for another Bering Sea trip. Goes out on a Russian ship this time as observer (?) until Aug. 22. Trip cut short when her fellow USA researcher becomes ill. She returns to Seattle on June 22.
Mark has job in Papua New Guinea (Lae-Mt. Hagen) doing gravity survey. Move from site to site by helicopter. VERY remote. After job done, Mark flies to New Zealand ( Auckland ).

1983 June 12 Barbara's brother, Noel, was promoted to Base Commander of Maintenance at the Portland Air Nat. Guard Base.

1983 July 02 We spend Fourth of July in Stanley, in the Sawtooth Mts. Idaho. We take a 7-mile hike to Moraine Ridge. On the Fourth of July we enjoy fireworks shot out over the Salmon River at Stanley. Not rowdy, as it was two years prior, when Mark & Isabelle were here.
Mark is on the South Island of New Zealand, going Glacier skiing on Mt. Cook. Goes to Tahiti on his way back home.

1983 July 22 Karen leaves on another Bering Sea trip.

1983 July 22 We leave for a trip to Hallidays and Kemmerichs, via Crater Lake. Visit with the Joles in Eugene, enroute. (Hal has divorced and remarried Dorris).

1983 July 30 Mark flies in to Portland and attends family picnic with us the next day. Al Kemmerich turns 80 years old on Aug. 1.

1983 Aug. 02 Mark drives back to Salt Lake City with us.

1983 Aug. 07 Mark joins us on a hike to Germania Pass, above Alta.

1983 Aug. 12 Mark throws a party using our new deck!! Karen returns from the Bering Sea trip.

1983 Aug. 13 Mark & Barbara go to Snowbird for their summer "fest" and show up on the evening news, filmed as they were watching the finale of the "1812 Overture" with many live cannons.

1983 Aug. 18 Mark climbs Kings Peak, at 13,528 elevation, the highest point in the Uintas.

1983 Aug. 19 Karen goes on research voyage off the Oregon coast.

1983 Aug. 19 - 23 We go to Cedar Breaks, Cedar City for the Shakespeare Festival, on to Zion, then the Grand Canyon and to Bryce enroute home.

1983 Aug. 27 Barbara & Betty Fife (CFG Ex.Dir) go on Native Plant Soc. mushroom hunt in the Uintas. Barbara doesn't partake of the cooked mushrooms. Glenn has joined AARP and we ask for senior discounts at motels.

1983 Sept. 03 Karen flies over from Seattle. We celebrate her birthday, and then she and Mark leave in his Jeep for Chaco Canyon. Karen flies back to Seattle from Las Vegas, Mark goes on to Death Valley, Mt. Whitney, and ultimately to Berkeley.

1983 October Mark stays with "Lara" Stonebraker whom he met in Tahiti. She lives in San Rafael, CA.

1983 November Mark & Lara drive Mark's Jeep to Mexico, via Baja California, Mazatlan, Patzcuaro and Toluca, near Mexico City.

1983 Nov. 03 We bought a Toyota "Tercel" 4WD wagon.

1983 Nov. 19 We leave on trip to spend Thanksgiving with Hallidays. Get stopped by big snowstorm, stay overnight at the Red Lion Hotel in Elko, drive home the next day. Cancelled the trip; never tried another Thanksgiving trip over the Sierra Nevada.

1983 December Mark and Lara driving deeper into Mexico. Go to Oaxaca, almost to border with Guatemala, head for the Yucatan and the Caribbean coast. Camp near Akumal, like it so much they stay longer than planned.

1983 Dec. 10 We join others on the now-traditional Christmas trip to Wendover. Glenn puts a couple dollars in a slot machine enroute to the room--and hits the jackpot! He has fun handling his silver dollars before returning them to the slot machines.

1983 Dec. 24 Karen arrives from Seattle by Amtrak train.

1983 Dec. 29 Mark and Lara arrive at the end of their long Jeep trip. They loved it!

1984 Jan. 15 Noma Halliday admitted to Mercy Medical Center in Redding. She had a stroke (Cerebral Vascular Accident) resulting from a blood clot in her right carotid artery. This has resulted in paralysis of her left side.

1984 Jan. 17 We fly to Redding. Terry & Gloria, and Roger & Bonnie also come over, as does Noma's brother, Orville.

1984 Jan. 27 Noma is discharged from hospital, moved to Crestwood Convalescent Home nursing home in Redding.

1984 February Mark working in Utah, doing a Great Basin Gravity study.

1984Feb. 22 Lara comes over to Salt Lake, stays with us.

1984 Feb. 24 - Mar. 3 Glenn & Barbara leave for Borrego Springs. Stay at the Roadrunner Club with the Knoches in a mobile home.

1984 Mar. 07 Lara returns to Calif.

1984 Mar. 09 Mark in Oakland for a week.

1984 Mar. 10 Barbara's uncle, Julius Kemmerich dies.

1984 Mar. 15 Karen goes to Cabo San Lucas for spring break. Gone ten days.

1984 Mar. 21 We attend Leroy & Barbara's 25th anniversary party at Marriott Hotel.
Mark does a canoe trip through Labyrinth Canyon on the Green River.

1984 April 20 We drive to Redding to see Noma & Irl, and then go on to Woodburn to visit with Kemmerichs. Noma is at the Crestwood Convalescent Home. While in Woodburn, we look into purchasing a lot in the new section of Senior Estates, and upon our return to Salt Lake, we put a lot on "hold" with a $1,000 deposit.
While we were in Calif. and Oregon, Lara came to Salt Lake. She and Mark had a "welcome home" dinner all ready for us!

1984 May 09 Mark spends his birthday on a river trip on the San Juan River. Karen probably was on another research cruise, returning to Seattle on May 15.

1984 May 21 Mark went to Austin, TX exploring possibility of moving there.

1984 May 25 Glenn & Barbara go to Arches & Canyonlands over Memorial Day weekend.

1984 June 16 We take a weekend/Fathers Day trip to Bryce Nat. Park

1984 June 21 Mark did a short contract job near Wickenburg, AZ. When he finished, Lara flew to AZ and they spent some time in Sedona.
Apparently Noma was back home for awhile, but returned to Crestwood Convalescent Home Nursing Home on June 26.

1984 June 27 Karen goes on a research cruise in the Bering Sea. Returns on July 17.

1984 July 01 Mark moves to Austin, TX.
Barbara & Glenn do a lot of hiking in the canyons east of Salt Lake City & camp in Christmas Meadows in the Uintas.

1984 July 13 Mark goes to Cozumel, Mexico for scuba diving.

1984July 30 Karen goes back to sea, returning on Sept. 14.

1984 August We go to the Cedar City Shakespeare Festival, Cedar Breaks Nat. Park & the Kolob Canyons section of Zion Nat. Park.

1984 Aug. 25 We left for a trip to see Kemmerichs in Woodburn and Hallidays in Woodburn. Talked to a builder in Senior Estates about modifying a floor plan for us. Mark joined us at Redding, and Terry's daughter, Stephanie, and stepdaughter, Stacey also was there. Lara may have come up to Redding too.

1984 Sept. We stayed at the Red Lion Hotel in Winnemucca on the way back; we got the last hotel room--the Presidential Suite!!

1984 Sept. 10 We are now serious about retiring in 1985, and have the Bekins Moving Co. rep. come out to give us an estimate.

1984 Sept. 22 Karen goes to California for vacation? Visits Hallidays and Kemmerichs on her way back to Seattle.

1984 Oct. 06 Mark comes to Salt Lake City for a week. Back in Austin, he buys a condominium in "Neely Canyon" development. His address: 8200 Neely Dr., # 237, Austin, TZ 78759Mark now a partner with David Wight in their own company, "Sorex." Their office is at 8108 Mesa Drive, Austin.

1984Nov. 17 We attend the wedding of the Kuehl's son, Eric to Janet.

1984 Dec. 02 Mark spends a week in Atlanta, GA. Both Mark and Karen come for Christmas. Mark goes on to New Mexico and " Navajo Land," returning to Austin on Jan. 6.
