Events in our lives:

1975 January Karen returns to UW, moves into an apartment with Barbara Inglin, 2317 1/2, N. 45th, Apt. # 7, Seattle, WA.

1975 March Glenn & Barbara take a winter vacation to the desert, going to Indio and Borrego Springs, staying at the Roadrunner Club, for the first time. Al & Pauline Kemmerich join them for the Indio portion of their trip.

1975 May Barbara resigns from Hypertension Clinic--is offered a Civil Service job as clerk at the Bureau of Hearings and Appeals, under Social Security.
Mark returns from London. Decides to apply for graduate school in geophysics at Univ. of Utah. Hires on with a group of expert kayakers to shuttle their car as they run rivers around the west, including the Illinois River in southern Oregon. Later, he worked in Milford, Utah for the summer.

1975 May 23 Kemmerichs come for Mark's (belated) birthday.

1975 June Karen stays at UW, going to summer school. Mark worked in Milford on a Dept. of Energy geothermal grant provided by Dr. Ward, Geophysics Dept Head at U of U. Mark was doing resistivity surveys on hot springs. Doing basic geothermal exploration for possible development of geothermal energy plant. (Later, electricity was made with steam at this site—see Mark's 1984 photo). Barbara is offered a Civil Service job as secretary to the Chief of Medical Service at the VA Hospital. She gladly leaves Social Security, disillusioned about the lazy and surly attitudes of the staff at the Hearings & Appeals Bureau, towards elderly citizens with Social Security problems.
Glenn and Barbara take trip to Arches Nat. Park, Mesa Verde N.P, and the Front Range towns of Silverton, Ouray and Telluride.

1975 July Mark buys a used motorbike, later stolen from our garage and wrecked.

1975 July 07 Barbara starts at the VA Medical Center. Glenn & Barbara manage to squeeze in lots of wildflowering trips on weekends.

1975 August The Lillys move to Guam where Bob pilots USAF planes flying into the eye of typhoons.
Glenn & Barbara even manage to get to the Wind River range and Square Top Mountain at Green River Lake on a weekend. Wildflower slides are piling up!

1975 September Karen comes to Salt Lake by bus, Kemmerichs drive over for visit. Karen returns with them for her senior year at Univ. of Washington.
Mark is awarded a fellowship in geophysics at U of Utah, and moves into an attic apartment in the Avenues at 2293 Preston, Salt Lake City 84109. His thesis advisor is Dr. Cook.

1975 October 02 Hallidays come for a visit. The golden aspen in Big Cottonwood Canyon put on a great show for them.

1975 Oct. 12 Glenn and Barbara take advantage of the Columbus Day Federal holiday and go to Capitol Reef and Goblin Valley. The first winter storm chases them all the way home.

1975 December 22 Glenn and Barbara celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Glenn gives Barbara a beautiful ruby and diamond ring.
Mark spends his winter break in Mexico. To: Mexico City (sees Aguilars) and then to Puerto Vallarta.

1976 January 18 Glenn and Barbara celebrate their 25th anniversary with a trip to Borrego Springs, CA. They rent a double-wide mobile home at the Roadrunner Club for a week

1976 February 06 Noel comes to Hill Air Force Base, Ogden on business. Stays with us, we show him Temple Square.Mark's W.U. friends, Rob & Katie Melich now living in Salt Lake City.

1976 March Imp dies of feline lymphoma. Glenn and Barbara mourn. Besides working, Barb still busy with Campfire Girls.

1976 April 09 We buy a red VW "Rabbit." Barbara and Mark have lunch at "Gepettos" near campus frequently. Glenn & Barbara make early wildflower trip to Zion & St. George over the weekend.

1976 May Glenn and Barb play golf on a regular basis with Knoches.

1976 June 07 Mark leaves for geology job in Alaska for "Noranda Exploration" in the Brooks Range.

1976 June 12 Karen graduates from the Univ. of Washington. Smiling in the grandstand of the UW basketball court: Glenn, Barbara, Al & Pauline Kemmerich. Karen has applied, and been accepted in the Peace Corps, with assignment to Nepal in September.
Glenn, Barbara, and Karen take the long way back to Salt Lake City from Seattle, visiting Noel & Betty in their Damascus home, then going down the Oregon coast, through Calif. Redwoods, and across the Coast range to visit Hallidays in Redding.

1976 June 12 Karen goes back to Seattle, starts summer school at Univ. of Utah.

1976 July 03 Glenn & Barbara used the Fourth of July, and 200th anniversary of the founding of the USA to visit the Medicine Bow (Snowy Range) Mts.in Wyoming. They encounter lots of antelope and many bicyclists, taking part in the Bicentennial. They see Fourth of July fireworks in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and again in Salt Lake City on the 5th. No fireworks break the Sabbath in Salt Lake City on the 4th.

1976 July 26 Glenn & Barbara join Les, Roger & Terry and their families in celebrating Irl and Noma's 50th wedding anniversary in Redding. Temps around 112-114 do in everybody's car air conditioning.

1976 August Karen comes home when summer school is out, and prepares to leave for Nepal. She uses her graduation gift (sewing machine) to sew her own tent. Lasts for years!

1976 September 03 Mark leaves Alaska. Drives back with Navajo friend, "Austin Sam" down the ALCAN highway. Apparently Mark spent some time in Oregon, perhaps staying with Kemmerichs. Back to graduate school geophysics courses.

1976 Sept. 06 Karen flies to Atlanta, GA for Peace Corps preparation. Four days later, her group, " Nepal 60, Math/Science Teachers" flies to Kathmandu, Nepal. She is in language training until December. Her address is now: "c/o US Peace Corps, GPO Box 613, Kathmandu, Nepal." She is based in Pokhara.

1976 Sept. 20 Al & Pauline Kemmerich make a fall visit to us. Mark rode with Kemmerichs from Woodburn to Salt Lake. They stay overnight in Redding, visiting with Hallidays. Mark stayed with Hallidays. Stayed in Reno, arriving in Salt Lake on Sept. 23. On the 27th Kemmerichs drove on to Moab, Kayenta and other points.

1976 December Mark spends Christmas with us. All we are allowed to send Karen for Christmas is a small package--she asks for (and gets) M&M's.
The Johnstons think we need a new cat, and find one that looks a lot like Imp. But, he's not Imp--and we never even give him a name, just "kitty."
Mark takes advantage of the "greatest snow on earth" and does a lot of skiing, especially back-country cross country skiing.

1977 January 24 Noel and Betty's first child, "Jason Christian" is born.
Karen completes her language training and is sent to her assignment: a teacher in the village of "Bichour" in the Himalayan foothills. The village is in the Hindu area of Nepal.
Mark is now living in a different apartment in the Avenues-- 679 2nd Ave. Apt. 5, Salt Lake City.

1977 February Glenn & Barbara go back to Borrego Springs, then on to San Diego.

1977 March 01 Barbara's uncle, Julius Kemmerich remarries at the age of 81 after being a widower for many years. His bride: Margaret.

1977 April Glenn and Barbara take a week's vacation to Arizona, both Mesa and Tucson. Probably visit " Green Valley " south of Tucson for the first time.

1977 May 15 We buy a new home at 3043 E. Brighton Place, near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon, and just south of 70th South Street. Our neighbors: to the south: Barry & Elsie Kenyon, who have 3 children. To the north: Brent & Cherie Omer. (She sings in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir)

1977 June 07 After advertising the Apollo Dr. house for a week, we sold it on our own to the son of the Ketterings, friends through bowling.

1977 June 18 Noel, Betty and little Jason come for a visit.
Mark goes to Monroe, UT for the summer, working on his gravity survey for his Master's thesis (geothermal energy)
Karen goes on a "trek" to Manang, near Annapurna and Tibet.

1977 July 01 We move to Brighton Way house.

1977 July 07 Sale closing on Apollo Dr. house. Mark hikes through Parunuweap Canyon, near Zion.

1977 July 23 Glenn & Barbara leave on a trip to: Yellowstone, Waterton Lake in Canadian Rockies, Sawtooth Mts. (taking a day hike into beautiful Sawtooth Lake ).

1977 August 20 Glenn & Barbara go to Monroe to see Mark. He takes us on a Jeep ride deep into the Tushar Mts. Barbara learns that if Mark says "we can take a shortcut back down the creek" he means we will actually drive down the creek bed!

1977 Aug. 30 Barbara flies to Seattle, meets Al & Pauline, and they board an Alaska Marine Ferry for a trip to Alaska. They visit: Ketchikan, Wrangell, St. Petersburg, Sitka, and Skagway. At Skagway, Al and Barbara take the narrow-gauge train to Lake Bennett in Canada. On the return to Ketchikan they visit with Stan Bishop, who worked for Al at Yes Bay in the 1930's.

1977 September 11 Barbara returns to Salt Lake City.

1977 Sept. 12 Mark goes to Calgary, Alberta for geophysics meeting.

1977 Sept. 24 Kemmerichs come for a visit.

1977 October Mark takes backpack hike into the Henry Mountains.

1977 Oct. 08 Bob & Nancy Lilly & Kathy visit us enroute from Guam to his new assignment in Little Rock, Arkansas.

1977 November We mail books to Karen, needed at her school. Send them through the State Dept.

1977 Nov. 24 Mark and his fellow geophysics students, Bill Petrick and Brad join us for Thanksgiving, along with the Knoches.

1977 December 02 We join the Knoches and others on our first Wendover Christmas junket. For $25, we get our hotel room and the most memorable dinner and wine that we will ever experience. Years later, when we get together with these people, we all reminisce about that fantastic dinner.
Mark spends his winter break visiting Austin Sam and witnessing the Navajo New Years ceremony.

1977 Dec. 25 John & Ginny Johnston & family join us for Christmas dinner. Since both Mark and Karen are gone for Christmas, we "adopt" one of the S.L. Tribune's needy families and find out how expensive children's clothing has become.

1978 March Mark goes on backpack hike through the "Waterpocket Fold" area of Canyonlands.

1978 April 20 Glenn & Barbara left on trip to: Carson City (see Roberts), Jackson, CA, Santa Clara (See Terry's & Les), Bodega Bay, Wine Country, Redding (Hallidays).
Noel Kemmerich promoted to Captain at the Air Nat. Guard Base, Portland.

1978 May Al & Pauline Kemmerich came for visit & celebrated Mark's 26th birthday.

1978 May 23 Mark defends his Masters thesis successfully.

1978 May 31 Mark leaves for Alaska and job with "Resources Associates of Alaska." He works at "Delta Camp." Hungry bears attack the camp tents. Dead bears leave via helicopter.

1978 June 03 Glenn & Barbara take another weekend trip to Arches. Later take hikes in the Wasatch, and get serious about landscaping the Brighton Place yard. Glenn finds the huge remnants of an earlier concrete driveway, barely covered with earth--all over the front yard. Glenn's vegetable garden is amazing--we eat very well all summer long.

1978 July Lots of letters flying back and forth between us and Karen in Nepal, and Mark in Alaska.
Barbara helps her brother, Noel, gather up old family photographs, to be used in a collage, given to Al & Pauline at their 50th anniversary party in August.

1978 August 25 Glenn & Barbara leave for Kemmerich's anniversary in Burlington, WA, via: Dillon, MT, Couer d'Alene, ID, and the North Cascades Pk. They hike to the top of Cascade Pass --retracing Barbara's great-grandfather's trek of the 1870's
All of Al's living siblings and most of Pauline's attend their anniversary dinner. Next day, some of the family tours the August Kemmerich homestead in Birdsview, WA.

1978 Sept. Karen celebrates her 24th birthday in Nepal. Some of the Peace Corps women meet--all dressed in their saris.

1978 October Mark leaves Alaska, prepares to go to Asia.

1978 Oct. 17 Mark leaves for Hong Kong. Later, goes to Nepal, doing the Annapurna Trek, sees Karen, then in December to India, Burma and Thailand.

1978 November Glenn & Barb buy new Mikasa china set at ZCMI dept. store. Show it off with dinner for eight at Thanksgiving.

1978 Nov. 06 Barbara transfers from Medical Service to Learning Resources at the VA Medical Center. Her bosses: Paul Smith, and Yoshiko Taylor. Barbara gets to use lots of new technology stuff, including VYDEC "word processor" forerunner of PC computers.

1978 December Karen decides to extend her Peace Corps tour for an extra year. They grant her a month's home leave and she arrives on Dec. 22, our anniversary.

1979 January Karen gets to see many of her friends, and also visits the dentist and eye doctors. The tiny rocks in Nepalese food are hard on the teeth!

1979 Jan. 23 Karen flies back to Nepal, via Boston & Frankfort, Germany. Her new assignment is a Tibetan-culture village, "Thonje", near the Annapurna trekking trail.
Mark goes to Australia. Gets a job there in South Australia.

1979 February Glenn & Barbara take a winter break in "Sun City West" near Phoenix, AZ. They visit Al Kemmerich's cousin, George Urbain, who lives at a nursing home nearby. Also visit Glenn's cousin, Leah & husband Bob Johnson, as well as Ron McEuen and Mark Reims, friends from AZ Public Svc days. Both now living in Phoenix

1979 March We attend organizational meeting of the "Utah Native Plant Society."

1979 April 19 Noel and Betty Kemmerich have their second child, "Nicole Marie."

1979 April In early April we receive a letter from a law firm in Denver. Wondering who in Denver might be mad at us, we hesitate to open the envelope. When we do, out falls a photo of Karen, taken in Thonje! The message: "I enclose a picture of Karen which I recently took outside of her school building in Nepal. This is to report that she seems in good health and cheerful spirit." This definitely made our spirits cheerful as well.

1979 May 05 We take a short trip to Las Vegas and Zion.

1979 May 12 Kemmerichs arrive for a visit.

1979 June Another trip to Arches for us in early June. We are now active in the "New Voice Club", part of Am. Cancer Society. We go to visit recent laryngectomees. Utah Cancer Society makes a TV commercial, featuring Glenn.

1979 July 09 Barbara joins her Learning Resources bosses and goes to a conference in New York City. She warns her group that New York is full of soot, hot and humid in the summer and full of very rude people. Wrong! New York is clean, cool and friendly. Stayed at the "Halloran House." We go to see "Chorus Line" Barbara goes on to Doylestown and visits Hermsens, Nies's, Kilmers, Miss Faatz from Otto Rank and also stays with Glenn's cousin, Anita & her husband, Fernando Aguilar, who live in "New Britain" on outskirts of Doylestown. Mark reaches "Broken Hill" in New South Wales, Australia, and meets a pretty nurse, Joanne Marinovich.

1979 August 08 Glenn is off to Blue Bell, PA on business. He goes up to Doylestown, and stays with Anita & Fernando Aguilar. Our only return trips to Doylestown, and they take place only a month apart!

1979 Aug. Mark gets another job in Australia which takes him pretty much around the perimeter of the continent: West Australia, Perth, New South Wales, Queensland, Darwin and back to New South Wales by December.

1979 September By September, Glenn has worked miracles with our yard. Alaskan cedar retaining walls, stained to match the house are in place in front, the lawn is emerald green and petunias, rudbeckia and mums are all blooming. The concrete has been converted into stepping stones through the front garden. Out back, we are reveling in sweet corn and sweet tomatoes. Who cares if winter is around the corner?

1979 Sept. 07 Kemmerichs make their now-traditional early fall visit.

1979 Sept. 14 The VW Rabbit broke its timing chain and had to be TOWED to the shop. Oh, the shame of it! BAD Rabbit! Barbara is now helping with the Native Plant Society newsletter.

1979 October 06 We fly to Sacramento, rent a car and go to: San Jose to see Terry & Theresa, Point Reyes, Bodega Bay, Glen Ellen in Wine Country, and Redding.

1979 Oct. 30 We buy a Datsun 310 hatchback. Bye Bye Rabbit!

1979 November 03 Sold the Maverick to the mother of a Learning Resources staff person.

1979 Nov. 29 Mark leaves Tahiti, flies to Los Angeles. He visits Roger Halliday and his family on Catalina Island.

1979 December 05 Mark arrives in Salt Lake City. Leaves a few days later to drive to San Francisco and meet Joanne Marinovich, from Australia, who arrives there Dec. 11. Mark and Joanne go on driving trip, ending up in Oregon just before Christmas.

1979 Dec. 22 We fly to Portland and spend Christmas with Al & Pauline, Noel & Betty and Mark & Joanne.

1979 Dec. 27 Mark & Joanne start drive back to Salt Lake City, arriving on the 29th.

1979 Dec. 30 Glenn & Barbara fly home from Portland.
