2010 Jan. 4 Barb has annual eye exam, gets prescription for new glasses.
2010 Jan. 6 In preparation for annual physical, Barb has mammogram and gets a good report. Glenn has his turn at the eye dr. No new glasses.
2010 Jan. 7 The Avamere “A's” beanbag baseball team plays at Madrona Hills. We lose. Badly.
2010 Jan. 9 Glenn gets his H1N1 Flu shot at Salem Clinic.
2010 Jan. 12 Avamere holds a “Show and Tell” program.
2010 Jan. 13 Barb has her annual check-up. Gets H1N1 flu shot. Schopperts come for a visit.
2010 Jan. 14 Mark leaves Austin for Colombia with Rob. A 2-week visit to friend Jeff (in Cali) and a week in Medellin where Mark enjoys riding the local cable cars from one end of the city to the other. Whee!
2010 Jan. 16 We attend the Travel Fair at the Senior Center.
2010 Jan. 17 Our first casino trip of 2010! By bus to Chinook Winds with LaFyrne & Karen.
2010 Jan. 18 We attend the weekly European History lectures at Avamere presented by Basil for the next few months.
2010 Jan. 20 Mark flies from Cali to Medellin. Rob lingers in Cali. Goes to Medellin Jan. 26.
2010 Jan. 23 Karen joins local Audubon group for Keizer birding trip.
2010 Jan. 24 It rains! In our bathroom! Water overflows from bathtub above us, comes pouring through ventilation opening. Floods our bathroom, but stops there although it also kills the kitchen light fixture.
2010 Jan. 27 We attend McNary High School's production of “Kiss Me Kate.” Excellent!
2010 Jan. 28 Mark and Rob leave Colombia. On the Miami-Dallas leg of the flight, Mark's plane is hit by lightning. Scary, but no problems. Glenn, Barb and LaFyrne take Avamere bus to Spirit Mt.
February
2010 Feb. 5 Barbara learns from B. Urbain that there are many handwritten letters from her grandmother, Maria Anna Hommerding, in his possession. He offers to share them with us.
2010 Feb. 7 We join Karen on birding walk at Willow Lake water treatment ponds and Inland Shores lake. Karen & Barb see “Young Victoria” movie later. Glenn is busy with Super Bowl game which the New Orleans win over the Colts (31-17). Glenn mourns the loss of football for the next six months.
2010 Feb. 9 Karen & Barb attend slide show on “Birds of Skagit Valley” at Willamette U. In preparation for Karen's trip to Skagit Valley later.
2010 Feb. 10 To Chinook Winds with two Avamere friends. David blacks out at home, has bad fall, in hospital with severe hematoma on lower spine and cracked neck vertebra. Develops pneumonia in hospital.
2010 Feb. 11 Karen & Barb attend lecture at Willamette U. on Ecuador & Galapagos.
2010 Feb. 13 Karen and fellow birder “Jorge” from Guatemala join us on outing to Baskett Slough.
2010 Feb. 20 Karen takes train to Seattle, she and friend Barb drive up to Skagit Valley to see thousands of Snow Geese and other wintering birds in Skagit Delta. Returns next day. David moved to physical rehab. hospital.
2010 Feb. 23 Mark buys new washer at Home Depot. It snows in Austin! We take Barb's opal ring to Bouchet Jewelers to be re-sized. $68.
2010 Feb. 25 If it's the last Thursday of the month, it's time for the Avamere bus trip to Spirit Mt. Terry joins us there. Later we attend Archeology Society meeting at Willamette.
2010 Feb. 26 Barb and Betty B. have lunch at “Annette's” in West Salem. Mark attended a Flyer Talk "Do" in Austin.
2010 Feb. 27 David is discharged from physical therapy hospital.

2010 Mar. 2 We pick up opal ring.
2010 Mar. 4 To Willamette for Archeology lecture on “Tunisia.”
2010 Mar. 5 Go with Avamere bus to Monmouth for tour of Jensen Arctic Museum.
2010 Mar. 7 To Florence casino with Karen, return next day. “Sea of Cortez” cruise documents now ready.
2010 Mar. 10 Avamere installed new mini-blinds in living room sliding door.
2010 Mar. 11 Avamere holds “antiques appraisal” show.
2010 Mar. 13 Barb attended Genealogy Soc. monthly meeting at State Library. Talk on using “Ancestry.com” at Library.
2010 Mar. 16 Avamere celebrated St. Patrick's Day with root beer floats in Living Room.
2010 Mar. 22 Anita flies to Texas and New York to visit her sons for her birthday. Stays with Roberto on Cape Cod.
2010 Mar. 23 Avamere “A's” beats Emerald Pointe at beanbag baseball. Yeah, team!
2010 Mar. 25 Karen takes advantage of her Spring Break to go to Spirit Mt. with us on the Avamere bus.
April
2010 April 10 Barb attends another Genealogy Society meeting at the State Library.
2010 April 11 M. Stupfel & Karen come for Sunday dinner with us at Avamere.
2010 April 13 LaFyrne joins us on Spirit Mt. Trip.
2010 April 15 We join 50+ Salem Senior Center bus/train trip to Hood River and Parkdale. Pear trees are in bloom in the Hood River valley. In the evening, Barb and Karen go to Archeology meeting on “Egypt” at Willamette.
2010 April 17 Bought a “Photo Frame” and Cuisinart coffee maker at Costco.
2010 April 21 Mark bought Vizio 42” HD TV at Costco in Austin. Later returned it.
2010 April 22 What?Avamere Casino bus trip again?
2010 April 23 We fly to San Diego on SWA, stay at the Westin Gas lamp Quarter thanks to Mark's Starwood points. Enjoy looking at the nearby “Horton Plaza” mall and have dinner there—outdoors! Ah, San Diego weather.
2010 April 24 We taxi down to the cruise ship pier and board the Holland America ship, the Oosterdam for a ten-day cruise to the Sea of Cortez. We have a balcony cabin, #4035.
2010 April 25 An “At Sea” day as we sail down along Baja California.
2010 April 26 The ship is anchored in the harbor of Cabo San Lucas. We decline to tender in, just enjoy a relaxing day & wonderful views of the famous “Los Arcos” rocks at the southern tip of Baja.
2010 April 27 Today the port is Loreto and we enjoy strolling under the arched trees. But, concrete has come to Loreto and they are paving over the plaza. Too bad.
2010 April 28 Today we are in Topolobampo on the Mexican mainland. We take a boat excursion to see birds and dolphins. Nice!
2010 April 29 We were to be at La Paz, but “too windy” the harbor master said. Adios!
2010 April 30 Mazatlan today. We take a long, but nice bus trip inland to the “Sierra Madre” mountains where the Spanish started removing gold and silver at “Concordia” and “Copala” in 1565! Also visited primitive brick factory and furniture factory.
May
2010 May 1 Our last port—Puerto Vallarta. Today's tour “Town, Country and Tequila” gave us a good look at the fertile valley east of “PV.” Tasted very spendy Tequila and enjoyed the “Malecon” sculptures along the beach downtown.
2010 May 2 An “At Sea” day and we loafed and enjoyed the ship's amenities. Lunch was the “Mariner's Society” private lunch in the main dining room with champagne flowing. Excellent! Back home, Karen went birding near Hillsboro with “Jorge.”
2010 May 3 Yet another “At Sea” day, pretty much involving all the disembarkation stuff and packing.
2010 May 4 A couple hours late in leaving the ship (all those darn Canadians had to go through a SLOW immigration screening) but by 11 we were on dry land and in an airport van. Got back to Salem at 8 pm. and at Avamere and our apartment by 9 pm. Good trip, but we now prefer Princess line.
2010 May 6 Karen attended the first of a series of naturalist lectures and an OSU “coastal” workshop at Coos Bay. Norvada had her second hip replacement surgery.
2010 May 7 Norvada had her second hip replacement surgery.
2010 May 8 Mark flew to Portland to celebrate his 58th birthday with us.
2010 May 9 Mark & Karen shared Mothers Day and his birthday with us at Avamere. Later, Karen bought a new HP computer at Costco. $1,000 with 25” monitor and 1 terabyte hard drive.
2010 May 10 We picked up Mark and Karen at her home and drove through “Old Historic Columbia Gorge Highway,” stopping at Multnomah Falls Lodge for lunch. Drove eastern segment of Historic Highway from Mosier to Rowena Loop. Stayed overnight at Shilo Inn, on the bank of the Columbia River near The Dalles Dam. Finally Mark got to blow out the candles on his birthday cake!
2010 May 11
En route back to Portland, we drove over Hood River bridge to the
“Spring Creek” Federal Fish Hatchery at Underwood, WA where Barbara
lived from 1933 – 1937. Back to Hood River, where we ate lunch and took
a tour of the “Full Sail” Brewery and Mark bought a souvenir case of
beer.
2010 May 12 Karen attended the Clackamas Community College's “Sustainability” conference in Oregon City while Mark came down for lunch and a visit with Terry. Mark stayed overnight at the new Avamere guest room.
2010 May 13 Mark took the train to Oregon City. We bought our summer flowers for the balcony flower boxes: “Super Cascade” petunias and Ivy Geraniums. Glenn got two tomato plants: Early Girl and Better Boy.
2010 May 14 Mark and Karen have lunch with Betty at the “Sweet Tomatoes” in Clackamas. J. Johnston visits, we take him to Schreiner's Iris Gardens before he heads home to Salt Lake City.
2010 May 15 Mark flies back to Austin.
2010 May 16 Karen joins us on a bus trip to Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City.
2010 May 17 Barbara & LaFyrne visit Norvada at Benedictine Rehab Center in Mt. Angel.
2010 May 18 The beanbag baseball team has another match at Emerald Point. We win, but only by a little.
2010 May 22 We attend a production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at the Western Mennonite School in West Salem with Karen. Great!
2010 May 27 Off on Avamere bus to Spirit Mt. again. Barbara & Karen attend lecture at Salem Library on “Melting Glaciers and Rising Seas.”
2010 May 28 Mark flies to Anchorage, Alaska. Stays with friend Jeff. Next day they drive to “Kennecott” and camp near the former gold mine and mill.
2010 May 29 Karen comes down with flowers and we decorate family graves at Mt. Angel and Woodburn. We give “Grama” Hommerding's grave a good cleaning. Karen translated all of those difficult-to-read letters “Grama Hommerding” wrote from 1903 to 1912. We feel much closer to her now.
2010 May 31 Karen and Terry join us on the bus trip to Willamette National Cemetery, provide by Golden's Funeral Home. We leave flowers at Noel's and Leslie's grave.
June
2010 June 1 Knoches move to “La Posada” retirement apartments in Green Valley. Chinook Winds Casino calls Barbara and tells her she won $100 in slot play in the May drawing! Mark flies home from Anchorage.
2010 June 4 We take the Buick to Willamette Auto for the last time. They are going out of business. Why??
2010 June 5 In Austin, Mark hosts his first summer water volleyball games. Karen joins us on a Native Plant Society field trip to Kingston Prairie. The sun shines! (We have had the wettest, coolest spring on record in Western Oregon)
2010 June 6 LaFyrne & Karen join us on bus trip to Chinook Winds so Barbara can collect her $100 in slot play. Loses $30 of it.
2010 June 9 Karen attends an Online Library conference in Calgary, Canada. “Belle” and “Beau” come here for a stay at Kitty Kamp. Mark flies to Newark, NJ, stays overnight en route to “Paradise Island” resort near Nassau in the Bahamas.
2010 June 12 We take a picnic lunch to “Fort Yamhill” state park near Grande Ronde. Then, we went to the casino and lost money.
2010 June 14 Mark returns to Austin from Nassau. Mingled with the rich and swam with the dolphins at Paradise Island, which he dubbed “Industrial Tourism.” Schopperts, and relatives tour Avamere, join us for lunch.
2010 June 15 Barb takes train to Oregon City, joins Karen and Sharman and we drive I-84 to Pendleton. Stop at Deschutes St. Park en route. Stay at the “Wild Horse Casino & Hotel.” Have a quick tour of the Museum, a visit with cousin Agnes, and a nice soak in the hotel's hot tub. Oh yes, play the slots too.
2010 June 16 We continue our drive through Eastern Oregon, stopping at Emigrant Springs and Hilgard Jct. State parks, plus Bird Track nature trail along Grande Ronde River south of Hilgard Jct. Stay at the “Wilderness Inn” in Enterprise. Cold, drizzly. Drive to Joseph for dinner, and on to Wallowa Lake, stopping in at the Lodge. Fresh snow not too far up the mountain sides!
2010 June 17 We spend the day on “Zumwalt Prairie” seeing WAY more elk (130+) than people (maybe half a dozen cars). Maybe due to wet, cool spring wildflowers on the Prairie are spectacular. Birds good too. Drive down to Imnaha for dinner. See more birds including peacocks (!!) at Imnaha. Amazing drive through Imnaha Canyon. Beautiful sunset as we drive back into the Wallowa Valley.
2010 June 18 Back to Oregon City where Sharman heads for work and Karen retrieves the kitties from Kamp. Glenn takes part in the Fathers Day beanbag baseball tournament at Avamere.
2010 June 20 Karen comes for Fathers Day lunch then we scoot over to Spirit Mt.
2010 June 22 A. Randow comes to check out Avamere, has health emergency and ends up in hospital!
2010 June 24 Yep, time for Avamere casino bus trip. Also booked Princess Cruise to New England/Canada through Costco.
2010 June 25 Back on the Avamere bus, we go on a picnic at “Ft. Hoskins” county park northwest of Corvallis. The counterpart to Ft. Yamhill, protecting the Siletz Confederated tribes from white settlers.
2010 June 26 Barb booked air and Newark, Quebec City hotels through Expedia agent.
2010 June 27 Kathi Follett and her family stayed overnight in Salem, en route to Vancouver, B.C. for Alaskan cruise. We bought Barbara a computer similar to Karen's at Costco. $1,000. 25-inch monitor and 1 terabyte hard drive. Oh yes, with new OS, Windows 7.
2010 June 28 Kathi and family come for lunch with us at Avamere.
2010 June 30 Kathi's Alaskan cruise leaves on Holland America ship from Vancouver, B.C.
Mark flies out from Austin to house and cat-sit for Karen while she is in Costa Rica for 2 weeks.
July
2010 July 15 Karen flies from Portland to Dallas on the first leg of her trip to Costa Rica. Plane's autopilot goes out soon after take-off, goes to Seattle for repair, can't fix it, Karen doesn't leave for Dallas until 5 p.m. American puts her up in a hotel, for 3 hours before she catches 7 am flight to Miami, then to Costa Rica.
2010 July 16 Karen finally gets to Costa Rica in the afternoon. Stays with future in-laws of Elisabeth Wierenga in “Alajuela” suburb of San Jose, CR. In the next 2 weeks, Karen, Susan Wierenga and Elizabeth's mother, Susan, go to: Osa Peninsula in western C.R., (Bosque del Rio Tigre Lodge), and another lodge; then to LaSelva, (Hotel Galivan), then to Bosque de Paz Lodge in the “cloud forest.”
2010 July 29 Karen flies home via Denver—with no interruptions.
August
2010 Aug. 3 Both Mark and Karen fly away—Mark home to Austin, Karen to Salt Lake City for 2 weeks. Goes to Cedar City for Shakespeare festival, then birding around Salt Lake during last week.
2010 Aug. 10 Mark flies to Stockholm, Sweden in Business Class.
2010 Aug. 11 Mark arrives in Stockholm, checks in to the Grand Hotel for a 2-week stay at the rate of $30/night. This is the hotel the Noel Laureates stay at, for upwards of $300. /night. Another Flyer Talk “deal.”
2010 Aug. 14 Karen returns from Salt Lake City and retrieves her cats from Barb and Glenn. Kitty Kamp is closed again.
2010-Aug. 18 We were shocked—shocked! to get in the Buick and find the battery had died—after 5 years. Les Schwab came and put in a new one.
2010-Aug. 22 To Canyonville with Karen. Stayed at Seven Feathers Hotel/Casino. Enjoyed the hot tub—the gambling? Not so much.
2010-Aug. 24 Mark flew from Stockholm to Krakow, Poland via Munich. Stayed at Holiday Inn.
2010-Aug. 26 Karen attended one of the “Master Naturalist” workshops at the Tillamook Forest for 2 days.
2010-Aug. 27 We went on the Avamere picnic to Lyons County Park. Beautiful day.
2010-Aug. 31 Mark finishes up his visit to Krakow, after visiting the famed salt mines; and flies home via Frankfurt and Austin.
September
2010-Sept. 1 Karen and Barbara attend the Oregon State Fair in Salem.
2010-Sept. 3 Barb goes on the Avamere bus trip to the “Swan Island Dahlia Gardens” in Canby. VERY hot day!
2010-Sept. 6 Glenn goes to “urgent care” to check out pain in his upper left back. Dr. sends him to Salem Hospital Emergency. He checks out fine. Later concludes pain was a little-used muscle that got overworked during exercise class.
2010-Sept. 7 Glenn sees orthopedist, Dr. Zirschky, about his sore knees. The diagnosis: “Glenn, your knees are shot.” Arrangements made for a right knee replacement in Jan. 2011.
2010-Sept. 9 The Olivers join us for Avamere's monthly wine and cheese party.
2010-Sept. 10 We go on the Avamere bus trip to Multnomah Falls for lunch.
2010-Sept. 11 Barb replaces her 7-year-old rolling duffle bag at Costco. Still $39.99. Such a bargain!
2010-Sept. 13 Vacation is over for Karen; she returns to work.
2010-Sept. 18 Barb attends her Nu Delta reunion at Claribelle's home in Portland.
2010-Sept. 20 Mark left for Iquitos, Peru with friend Jack. Iquitos' claim to fame—largest city with no access by road. Fly or arrive by boat. In Amazon basin. Home of the famous Raft Race. We get flu shots at Safeway.
2010-Sept. 25 We celebrate Glenn's birthday early with Karen at Spirit Mt.
2010-Sept. 26 Famous Iquitos Raft Race ends.
October
2010-Oct. 2 Mark and Jack leave Iquitos via Lima and Miami. Mark home on Oct. 4.
2010-Oct. 5 We drive to Karen’s, stay overnight in preparation for our flight to Newark, NJ.
2010-Oct. 6 We fly to Newark, stay overnight at Marriott Fairfield Inn.
2010-Oct. 8 Golden Princess visits Newport, RI. We take bus tour of “cottages,” town, old Ft. Adams. Sunny Day.
2010-Oct. 9 Golden Princess visits New London, CT. We stay aboard and enjoy the balmy day and sunshine while watching a movie by the pool. Mark's friend, Jeff, is married in Las Vegas.
2010-Oct. 10 Our port: Portland, ME. Our tour: Lighthouses of Maine.
2010-Oct. 11 We visit Boston, MA. Take the Scenic Boston bus tour. Still sunny!
We attend the “Captain's Circle” cocktail party before dinner. Mark gives up his Wynn Parlor Suite in favor of “only” a “Resort Room” at the Wynn for--$25/night.
2010-Oct. 12 Today we are in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. Highlight of our bus tour was visit to the “Reversing Falls” and its Class 4 rapids. Yep, still sunny!
2010-Oct. 13 Today our ship is at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. We visit “Peggy's Cove” and “Peggy's Lighthouse” with about 3,000 other cruisers. Another sunny day!
Mark flies back to Austin.
2010-Oct. 14 Our last Maritimes port-Sydney, Nova Scotia.
2010-Oct. 16 We sail up the St. Lawrence River and dock right in front of Quebec City's “Old Town” with the Chateau Frontenac on the ramparts above. Bus tour of major sights.
2010-Oct. 17 We disembark and take taxi to Times Hotel near the airport. Relax and enjoy A&W's fast food.
2010-Oct. 18 We spend over 20 hours in airport lines or planes flying back to Portland. Quebec City, Newark, Seattle, and Portland. Karen meets us at 11 p.m. We stay overnight with her.
2010-Oct. 19 We drive back to Avamere, in time for lunch.
2010-Oct. 25 Voted by mail, depositing our ballots at US Bank.
2010-Oct. 26 Glenn sees Dr. Srinivasin for skin rash, leaves with biopsy of nose skin cancer!
2010-Oct. 27 Glenn sees eye dr. gets new Rx for CoSopt drops. Pressures: 17.
2010-Oct. 28 Mark leaves for month stay in SE Asia. First stop: Bangkok, Thailand.
2010-Oct. 31 Barb and LaFyrne take bus to Chinook Winds, where Barb uses the last of her free slot play from last May.
November
2010-Nov. 2 Mark get Myanmar (Burma)visa, takes overnight train to Chiang Mai.
2010-Nov. 3 Barb starts applying Fluoracil to hands, arms, chest to remove (painfully)”actinic keratoses” (pre-cancer sun-damaged areas). Glenn starts wearing an “event monitor” to check for any possible problems due to irregular heart beats. Sends results from monitor by telephone to St. Louis, MO. All turns out to be normal.
2010-Nov. 6 We attend a musical show at Salemtowne, with refreshments at Norvada's afterward. Mark “hotel hops” in Chiang Mai—1st: LeMeridien, 2nd: Holiday Inn, 3rd: Accor Mercure.
2010-Nov. 8 Mark flies to Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar for a week. The country held first elections in decades yesterday; all calm today.
2010-Nov. 10 We go on Avamere bus to Pentacle Theater for “Fiddler on the Roof.”
2010-Nov. 11 We attend Avamere's tribute to Veterans. Mark hires car, guide and driver to take him to beach 7 hour's drive from Yangon.
2010-Nov. 13 Barb attends genealogy society meeting on “Using Google for Genealogy”
2010-Nov. 14 Mark and entourage return to Yangon.
2010-Nov. 16 Mark flies to Singapore, stays at “Concorde” Hotel (formerly LeMeridien where we all stayed in 2008. His “deal” is a suite for $25/night.
2010-Nov. 18 Karen comes for Archeology lecture; stays overnight, brings cats to “Kamp.”
2010-Nov. 19 Karen goes to Newport for weekend for another “marine naturalist” workshop. Glenn has re-check with Dr. Srinivasin for rash. DX: benign, related to immune system, perhaps upset by back surgery last Dec. 2009.
2010-Nov. 20 Mark's friend, Fernando, joins him at the Concorde Hotel, after his trip to Vietnam.
They tour new “Marina Sands” Casino/hotel—to top floor and
vertigo-inducing views. Also boat tours in day and at night, and enjoy
$25 Singapore Slings at “Raffles” hotel bar.
2010-Nov. 21 Barb stops Fluoracil cream treatment 3 days early (3 weeks). Can't stand it any longer. Karen returns from Newport, and she and Kampers go home.
2010-Nov. 22 Glenn has his annual exam with Dr. Winthrop.
2010-Nov. 23 Mark flies from Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
2010-Nov. 25 Karen joins us at Avamere for Thanksgiving dinner. Mark is served “Gorky” in airport lounge on Thanksgiving Day.
2010-Nov. 26 Mark completes his SE Asia trip, flies back via Hong Kong, San Francisco, to Austin. A “Blue Norther”greets him on arrival in Austin. Glenn's repaired “maglite” returned.
2010-Nov. 27 Attended a 90th birthday party for Ann G.
2010-Nov. 28 Took the bus to Chinook Winds with LaFyrne.
2010-Nov. 29 Glenn bought a new Canon “SCX30IS” camera at Best Buy $368.99 Avamere cleaned our carpets.
December
2010-Dec. 2 We attend Archeology meeting on climate change in southern Egypt.
2010-Dec. 4 We attend Norvada's Christmas Musicale
2010-Dec. 5 We join Betty and Karen in Woodburn for lunch.
2010-Dec. 7 Mark flew to Las Vegas for back-to-back “mileage runs. Stays at Hooters Hotel/Casino for 2 nights. Air and hotels all free! Karen and Barb attend a WU lecture on the “Letters of Paul”
2010-Dec. 8 Mark and David visit “Atomic Testing Museum, plus new Colorado River bridge, and “Diamond Club” at Caesar's Palace. Barb and Glenn go to Residents Meeting where the annual gratuities are given to hourly Avamere employees.
2010-Dec. 9 Glenn has basal cell skin cancer removed from his nose by Dr. Goodenburger. We were told to bring a sack lunch, and we needed it! Slow procedure with biopsies after surgery.
2010-Dec. 10 Mark flies back to Austin, and several hours later, he flies back to Las Vegas, staying at the Riviera overnight.

2010-Dec. 13 Glenn buys a new HP Photosmart printer at Office Depot for $69.99. Barbara convinces him it will work better with her new Win 7 computer. Glenn gets her old one. We go on Avamere bus trip to see the Christmas lights in Keizer and Salem.
2010-Dec. 14 We take Spirit Mt. bus, meet Karen there.
2010-Dec. 15 Mark flies to Guadalajara for 6 nights. Stays at Holiday Inn Select and other hotels. He takes tour to Lake Chapala, later takes tour a tour to Tequila and several distilleries, later a tour of Guadalajara city. We both get haircuts. Barb sees dr. for UTI, put on CIPRO.
2010-Dec. 17 Terry joins us for lunch at Avamere. There is a special Christmas dinner tonight, with “Victorian Christmas Carolers,” special prime rib dinner and gift of photo albums.
2010-Dec. 20 Mark takes bus to Puerto Vallarta, stays at Westin Hotel on 7th floor. Glenn, Barb and Karen stay overnight at the Shilo Inn Suites at PDX, using a voucher Mark received last May in response to complaint of no hot tub working at The Dalles Shilo Inn.
2010-Dec. 21 Glenn, Barb and Karen fly to Puerto Vallarta on Delta via Salt Lake City at 6 a.m. Leave Karen's car at the motel. Snow in Salt Lake City delays flight while plane is de-iced. We have adjoining rooms (1210 and 1211) at Westin Hotel in Marina district. Our rooms are in the “Royal Beach Club” section with breakfast and dinner included. Weather in PVR: 79 and sunny. In evening, Glenn misses some steps, get cut over eye plus some lacerations and sore ribs. He gets 4 stitches over eye by “Dr. Miguel Carmago” the hotel's house doctor.
2010-Dec. 22 Glenn and Barb celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Karen secretly blows up 60 gold and red balloons and fills our balcony with them! In the evening, we take catamaran on one hour boat trip to remote “Las Caletas” for buffet dinner and “Rhythms of the Night” show, an anniversary gift from Mark and Karen. On return boat trip, we get an ovation from boat passengers for our 60 years of marriage.
2010-Dec. 23 Karen hires a birding guide (Mark S.) for a full day of birding. Goes to hillside areas and beaches south of PVR in morning. In afternoon, Glenn, Barb and Mark join them for visit to undeveloped beach and mangrove area at mouth of Ameca River north of the PVR airport. We see crocodiles!
2010-Dec. 24 We enjoy the hotel's special Christmas Eve buffet in the “El Palmar” restaurant. Excellent.
2010-Dec. 25 We bask at the hotel pools, exchange gifts, and relax.
2010-Dec. 26 We take taxi to downtown PVR, stroll along the Malecon, admiring the sculptures and SAND sculptures too. Take a break for “Bohemian Beer” and mango ice cream cone.
2010-Dec. 27 Glenn re-visits Dr. Carmago and has his stitches removed. Later we enjoy complimentary use of a $95USD/day “pergola” thanks to Glenn's mild comments in an e-mail to hotel manager about the lack of chaise lounges at the pools.
2010-Dec. 28 We check out of hotel, apply all remaining pesos to our bill, and take nice van to PVR airport. Mark leaves on Continental at 3 pm, Glenn, Barb and Karen leave on Alaska at 5:30 pm, flying FIRST CLASS all the way back. It takes Mark an hour to get through immigration at Houston, it takes us TWO HOURS to do the same at LAX. Awful! We arrive at PDX about midnight, wait half an hour for bags, so Karen gets vouchers from Alaska Air for miles or trip discounts. Take shuttle van to Shilo Inn Suites, stay overnight (again on a complimentary voucher).
2010-Dec. 29 After a nice breakfast at Shilo Inn, we drive back to Karen's in Oregon City. Glenn and Barb drive back to Avamere, arriving in time for lunch.
2010-Dec. 31 Avamere has a nice New Year's Eve dinner and party, complete with hats, “poppers” and champagne. Afterward, we join a pinochle/dominoes party in the Activity Room.

2011-Jan 3 Karen brought back a souvenir from Puerto Vallarta—a rotten cold. Was off work the entire first week of the new quarter.
2011-Jan 7 Glenn makes a new acquaintance—a skin doctor! He goes to see the dr. about a mysterious rash on his neck and comes back with an appointment to have a skin cancer removed from his nose.
2011-Jan. 10 Univ. of Oregon Ducks (no. 2 college team in the nation) played Louisiana State (no. 1) and lost. Boo Hoo.

Visited with cousin Agnes, drove through wheat fields south and west of Pendleton; on to “Battle Mt. St. Park” in the Blue Mts. Drove back to Portland via Heppner.
2011-June 10 Karen went back along I-84 to The Dalles for a library conference on “Virtual Reference.”
2011-June 11 Barb and Karen went to Baskett Slough to look for the rare “Fenders Blue” butterfly. It was cloudy and drizzly; we learned butterflies don't fly unless it's sunny.
2011-June 13 Karen was off to a library meeting in Vancouver, WA. Meanwhile, Glenn was busy seeing Dr. Hoda, gastroenterologist about having a colonoscopy. We sold $350. worth of “meltdown” silver coins at a coin shop in Keizer.
2011-June 14 Barb and LaFyrne went hunting for suitable restaurants for our Nu Delta reunion. Settled on the restaurant at the Mission Mill.
2011-June 17 Glenn and Barbara took the Friday Avamere bus to the “Heritage Rose Gardens” near St. Paul.
2011-June 19 Karen joined us for Fathers Day Dinner, then we walked through some of Keizer Rapids Park—out to the Willamette River banks.
2011-June 24 Barbara and LaFyrne hosted the Nu Delta reunion at our former sorority house, on 17th St. Now beautifully restored, we enjoyed a full tour of house and gardens. Glenn had a “vision field test” with Dr. Stevens. The test showed increasing areas of diminished vision due to Glaucoma. Dr. Stevens suggested eye surgery, after Glenn recuperates from the July knee surgery.
2011-June 26 Karen and Barb drove high up in the West Salem hills to a specialty nursery where Karen bought a Mulberry tree.

2011-July 1 After calling H-P about the letters rubbing off my computer keyboard, H-P sent a new one today. We celebrated with a Spirit Mt. trip with Karen, then enjoyed her garden's raspberries and strawberries.
2011-July 6 Glenn had pre-op exam with Dr. Zircon for knee surgery.
2011-July 8 Karen joined us for the annual Avamere outdoor barbecue.
2011-July 10 Mark flew out from Austin to house- and cat-sit for Karen while she is in Utah for the Cedar City Shakespeare plays. Karen flew to Utah the next day.
2011-July 12 Glenn and Barb attend a pre-knee surgery class and lunch at Salem Hospital. Mark came down later.
2011-July 13 Glenn and Barb attended the Pentacle play “Underpants” with Avamere.
2011-July 14 Mark came down for lunch and wine & cheese; then Mark and Glenn sorted Mark's impressive foreign coin collection.

2011-July 19 Glenn had his right knee replaced at Salem Hospital. Surgeon: Dr. Robert Zirschky. Mark and Karen waited with Barb during Glenn's 2-hour surgery. Used a “femoral block” anesthetic. Took Glenn until the following day before nerves in his right leg “woke up.” Otherwise, all went fine.
2011-July 20 Glenn started group therapy exercises; walked about 60 feet! Little pain.
2011-July 21 After another group therapy session (walked 200 ft!) and lunch, Glenn was discharged to Avamere Skilled Care Section. While there, he usually came to the apartments dining room for lunch and/or dinner. Had physical therapy while at Skilled Care.
2011-July 25 Mark flew back to Austin.

Jason and Sarina Weseman were married in her father's garden east of
Oregon City. Karen attended. Glenn was sent by ambulance to Salem
Hospital to check possible “cellulitis” skin infection on lower
right leg. Given antibiotics.

2011-August 2 Glenn had a post-op check with Dr. Zirschky. Said he would be discharged from Avamere Skilled Care, and would have physical therapy for several weeks at Hope Orthopedic at Inland Shores, Keizer.
2011-August 3 Glenn was discharged, returned to apartment.
2011-August 4 Glenn started physical therapy at Hope.
2011-August 9 Karen flew to Seattle to join friend Susan on trip to Panama and El Salvador. Her cats came to Kitty Kamp at our apartment.

Some loss of vision in upper left eye due to glaucoma and increasing pressures shown on Field Vision Tests.
2011-Sept. 16 We went to the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest with Avamere bus.
2011-Sept. 21 Glenn saw Dr. Lorna “Beth”Edmunds at Casey Eye Institute. Scheduled Glenn for surgery in 2 mos. See Dr. Falardeau (neuro-opthalmologist) to rule out any nerve problems. The first of MANY trips on I-5 from Salem to Portland.

2011-Sept. 30 Glenn had post-knee surgery check-up with Kyle Erkilla. The “click” in Glenn's new knee is due to the type of joint used—normal, and won't go away. Do more walking, bicycle riding.

2011-Oct. 2 Glenn celebrated his 84th birthday with a bus trip to Chinook Winds with Barb and Karen. Also got cookies and spread from Mark; cookies and bouquet from Karen.
2011-Oct. 4 Glenn saw Dr. Julie Falardeau at Casey Inst. She ordered a brain MRI to be done in Salem.
2011-Oct. 6 Went on Avamere bus to new Trader Joe's in So. Salem. Barb spent several hours on the phone with H-P reps, finally convincing them that her H-P printer would no longer make copies. She'll get a new one. Maybe.

2011-Nov. 3 Karen flew to Miami to attend Nicole and Tim's wedding.
2011-Nov. 4 Nicole and Tim Fisher were married on a cruise ship at Miami. Karen joined those guests sailing on to Nassau, Bahama.
2011-Nov. 7 Glenn had his pre-eye surgery exam with Dr. Winthrop. Karen returned from Miami. Nicole and Tim flew to Jamaica for their honeymoon.
2011-Nov. 8 Glenn had a pre-op visit with the glaucoma surgeon at OHSU and she signed the much-needed trip insurance papers so we could cancel the South America cruise.
2011-Nov. 9 Barb called Costco and canceled the cruise. We started canceling the various air reservations as well.
2011-Nov. 10 Barb joined Karen and friends for an Archeology Soc. lecture on “Boudica, Barbarian Queen.”
2011-Nov. 11 Barb attended the memorial service/Veterans Day program at Salemtowne.
2011-Nov. 12 Karen spent the day at the coast on a “mushroom walk.”
2011-Nov. 13 We drove to Karen's in preparation for Glenn's surgery. We stayed overnight with Karen for the next two nights.
2011-Nov. 14 Glenn had a “trabeculectomy” at Casey Eye Institute, OHSU to relieve the pressure in his left eye. Done as outpatient surgery and Karen drove us back to her home.
2011-Nov. 15-16 Glenn had daily re-checks with the eye surgeon at the Casey Eye Institute clinical offices in South Waterfront.
2011-Nov. 18 Glenn saw the eye surgeon at Albany. We got to see a different stretch of I-5!
2011-Nov. 19 Barb put the dahlias “to sleep” under a layer of plastic, newspapers and soil.
2011-Nov. 22 Another re-check for Glenn with the eye surgeon.
2011-Nov. 23 Glenn had his annual check-up with Dr. Winthrop. Got both pneumonia and tetanus booster shots.
2011-Nov. 24 Karen joined us for Thanksgiving dinner at Avamere.
2011-Nov. 25 Glenn and Barb spent “Black Friday” at the Spirit Mt. casino instead of in the stores. Paid off for Glenn, but not Barb.

2011-Dec. 3 We joined Karen on a nearby birding expedition to the Willow Lake Water Treatment ponds. Karen practiced with Glenn's camera in preparation for her Namibia trip.
2011-Dec. 5 Barb FINALLY mailed off all the claims forms and documents to the trip insurance company.
2011-Dec. 6 Karen brought her cats down for Kitty Kamp while she is in Namibia.
2011-Dec. 8 Karen started her two-day flight to Namibia from Portland. She flew in First/Business all the way, with lie-flat beds and good food. Her route: Portland to Chicago; then to Sao Paulo, on to Johannesburg, S. Africa, and the last leg to “Windhoek, Namibia.”
2011-Dec. 9 Glenn had a severe hemorrhage in his left eye. We spent the afternoon at Casey Eye Institute, seeing doctors at the S. Waterfront clinic and at the Retina Dept. at Casey on Marquam Hill. Will be at least 2 weeks before they can operate. Won't know for some time how much vision Glenn will retain in his left eye. We were in shock. Asked Mark to fly out and help with the difficult drives into Portland. There will be many of them.
2011-Dec. 10 Karen arrived in Windhoek after a long, but comfortable air trip. Mark arrived in Portland from Austin, staying overnight.
2011-Dec. 12 Mark's chauffeur duties begin. Glenn sees Dr. Bailey at Casey on the “Hill.” Karen's birding trip begins. They go to the first “camp” where they will stay in tents at “Sesriem” Camp.
