George W. Bush is sworn in as 43rd president (Jan. 20) Bush signs new tax-cut law, the largest in 20 years (June 7). Without U.S., 178 nations reach agreement on climate accord, which rescues, though dilutes, 1997 Kyoto Protocol (July 23). Terrorists attack United States. Hijackers ram jetliners into twin towers of New York City's World Trade Center and the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked plane crashes 80 mi outside of Pittsburgh (Sept. 11). Toll of dead and injured in thousands. Within days, Islamic militant Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda terrorist network are identified as the parties behind the attacks.In response to Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, U.S. and British forces launch bombing campaign on Taliban government and al-Qaeda terrorist camps in Afghanistan (Oct. 7). Kenneth L. Lay, chairman of bankrupt energy trader Enron, resigns; company under federal investigation for hiding debt and misrepresenting earnings (Jan. 24). President Bush's first State of the Union address vows to expand the fight on terrorism and labels Iran, Iraq, and North Korea "an axis of evil" (Jan. 29).
U.S. and Russia reach landmark arms agreement to cut both countries' nuclear arsenals by up to two-thirds over the next 10 years (May 13). Bush addresses United Nations, calling for a "regime change" in Iraq (Sept. 12). UN Security Council passes unanimous resolution calling on Iraq to disarm or else face "serious consequences." (Nov. 8).UN arms inspectors return to Iraq (Nov. 18). Bush signs legislation creating cabinet-level Department of Homeland Security (Nov. 25).

2003
In State of the Union address, Bush announces that he is ready to attack Iraq even without a UN mandate (Jan. 28). Space shuttle Columbia explodes, killing all 7 astronauts (Feb. 1). U.S. and Britain launch war against Iraq (March 19). Baghdad falls to U.S. troops (April 9). The U.S. declares official end to combat operations in Iraq (May 1). Events in our lives:

2000 During the year, we attend pinochle sessions, taking Meleece Carlson much of the time; Barb continues with the Life History class and book club; we participate in the Salemtowne Travel Club and pay visits to the Indian casinos, plus work with the Native Plant Society. Also attend Archeology lectures at W.U. Barbara starts her two-year term on the Salemtowne Board of Directors.

2000 Jan. 03 Barb is chosen for jury duty from Jan. 3 to Mar. 3.

2000 Jan. 04 Barb attends her first Salemtowne Board meeting as a member of the Board. She requests the office of Secretary and gets it.

2000 Jan. 06 Sylvia Romedahl Franzke, a Clackamas grade school and Milwaukie High School fellow alum organizes a reunion of those who attended both schools. We meet at the Sweetbriar Inn in Tualatin. Joan Bloedel who lives part-time in Keizer, OR and part-time in the South Seas goes with me. Frances Lowry Zaik is there—one of the trio who were "skipped from the 6th to the 8th grade at Clackamas with me.

2000 Jan. 07 Jury selection is held for a murder trial in Polk County. Several from Salemtowne are selected. Over 100 of the jurors are locked in a room while we fill out a 30-page questionnaire about our feelings about death sentences, etc.

2000 Jan. 08 We attend the mock jury trials at Willamette Law School.

2000 Jan. 13 Barbara have an individual interview for the murder trial, with the defendant in attendance. Plead need to not be away from home for so long, as Glenn would have no transportation, is a laryngectomee, etc., etc. This must work. I'm excused from the jury pool.

2000 Jan. 23 We attend the "Pilobilus" dance troupe performance at WOU.

2000 Jan. 25 Barb starts attending water aerobics classes at West Salem Courthouse Athletic Club.

2000 Jan. 26 Barbara and other Stupfel cousins meet in St. Paul restaurant to celebrate Marcella Stupfel Zielinski's birthday.

2000 Feb. 01 Barb joins other Chi O's in celebrating Norvada Smedley's birthday. We are all asked to wear purple. Marge Akers treats us all to an impressive dinner at Joel Palmer House in Dayton.

2000 Feb. 13 Mark leaves for Brazil for a month. First he visits "Ouro Prieto" a World Heritage site in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil, then.to Salvador, Brazil. Friends join him there for Carnivale. Mark also later goes to "The Diamond Plateau."

2000 Feb. 17 We show slides from Alaska cruise at Travel Club.

2000 Feb. 27 We attend "Copellia" ballet with Joles in Eugene.

2000 March 11 We give a wildflower slide talk for the "Sons of Norway" club.

2000 Mar. 17 Barb as Board Secretary starts shopping for a new photocopier for the ST Office.

2000 Mar. 20 We go with the Travel Club to Portland Art Museum for the "Strogonoff Exhibit." Mark returns to Austin from Brazil.

2000 Mar. 24 Gordon Pratt, Salemtowne resident and husband of Barb's Chi O sister, LaFyrne, dies in Palm Springs.

2000 Mar. 25 Karen goes to San Francisco for the American Chemical Soc. Meeting.

2000 Mar. 27 Barb helps organize classes at Salemtowne by Chemeketa Community College, including Beginning Spanish and Tai Chi.

2000 Mar. 29 We meet at Judy and Bob Oliver's home to plan NPSO field trips.

2000 Mar. 30 Barb organizes tours of Salemtowne common property for new Board, plus tour of ST Office for Board.

2000 Mar. 31 We attend Gordon Pratt's funeral at Golden's in Salem.

2000 April 02 Karen goes to Austin, she and Mark drove to Galveston, visit NASA, then go to a good birding spot at "High Island" northeast of Galveston.

2000 April 08 We join NPSO field trip to OHSU Herbarium and help with plant specimen mounting. Karen returns to Salt Lake City.

2000 April 04?? Sometime in April Mark and Tracey go to Cancun, rent a car, and drive down to Xcalak, Chetumal, Punta Allen and Puerto Aventuras.

2000 April 28 Barb attends CHI O reunion at Wemme, near Mt. Hood. Karen leaves for Kansas City.

2000 May 01 Glenn videotapes the Tai Chi class for instructor.

2000 May 04 We leave on trip to California, visiting: Coos Bay, Crescent City, Ft. Bragg, Inverness near Pt. Reyes Park, Calistoga, Jackson, CA (visiting Bezemers), Yosemite, staying at El Portal motel with amusing bear carvings; Redding (where we visit Folletts at motel & dinner)

2000 May 08 Karen returns from Kansas City.

2000 May 16 "Nomarco" contractor starts work on garage floor and driveway. Goal: to put trench in center of garage filled with concrete. Steel reinforcing rods were bolted to outside of garage wall and secured in concrete trench. To "pull" garage wall closer to garage floor—they had been separating.

2000 May 18 Not having enough to do for Salemtowne, Barb now starts attending the Glenn-Gibson Creek Watershed Council meetings. The Council is very interested in Salemtowne's No. 9 pond which is too warm for native trout.

2000 May 19 Barb attends the semi-annual Adult Association's meeting at '"Summerfield"

Nomarco pours new concrete for garage floor and driveway. We attend Spring Dance Concert at WOU.

2000 May 20 Barb attends her cousin, Pat Ackerman Napier's birthday at her son, Joe's, home in Keizer.

2000 May 22 Overhead Door company comes out to measure for new garage door. (Old one was bowed, did not keep out rain or mice.)

2000 May 23 Barb has annual check for glaucoma—pressures are up to 26 in right and 25 in left eyes. Dr. Stevens starts her on "Xalatan."

2000 May 26 Having persuaded Mark to buy a new GM car and use our accumulated GM bonus, we buy a new Suburu Outback at Capitol Chevrolet, Salem for $21,500. Later in the summer, Mark buys a Pontiac Grand Prix.

2000 May 27 Barb's cousin, Tim Follett's daughter, Sonia, graduates from San Francisco State Univ. She then joins the Peace Corps and goes to Georgia, former Russian state.

2000 May 29 We go on Golden's Funeral Home tour to Willamette Nat. Cemetery.

2000 June 01 Mark flies out to Portland. Comes to Salem.

2000 June 03 Mark, Glenn & Barb drive the old Suburu to Reno, NV.

2000 June 04 We go to Virginia City, and ride an old steam train.

2000 June 05 Karen flies to Reno, we go to an Irish dance show at the El Dorado, as Mark's guests. We are seated in the VIP section.

2000 June 06 Karen gets the keys to the Suburu, which she buys from us. She and Mark head for Salt Lake City, driving Highway 50 ("the Loneliest Highway in America" across Nevada. They stop at hot springs near Austin, NV and also drive through " Great Basin Nat. Park," going up to Wheeler Peak. Mark visits friends in Salt Lake City, then flies back to Austin. We fly back to Portland.

2000 June 07 Overhead Door installs new garage door.

2000 June 17 Sam Jones starts painting the house. Glenn leads NPSO field trip featuring "weeds."

2000 June 25 We go to Siletz Bay Lodge, Lincoln City overnight.

2000 June 30 We pick raspberries at Gehring's fields north on Wallace Rd. with Mary Miller.

2000 July 04 Barbara's cousin, George Stupfel, passes away.

2000 June 06 Sam Jones completes house painting job, we pay him $3,428.

2000 June 08 We attend George Stupfel's funeral at Catholic Church in north Salem.

2000 June 10 Apparently we didn't get enough raspberries—we pick some more at Gehring's fields. 75 cents per pound.

2000 June 11 We attend the Senior Fair at Chinook Winds Casino, Lincoln City.

2000 July 13 Glenn has bout of very high blood pressure. We cancel planned NPSO trip to Steens Mt.

2000 June 18 Karen goes to Las Vegas for Library meeting, then to Cedar City for Shakespeare plays with Salt Lake City friends.

2000 June 20 Watershed Council holds "raptor show" at Salemtowne, Barbara helps host.

2000 June 22 Karen returns to Salt Lake City. Erin Follett comes down and picks Marionberries with us.

2000 August Date?? Mark worked as an extra on a Sandra Bullock movie in Austin. He also pulled up the carpeting in his condo and painted the floor white.

2000 Aug. 03 We attend meeting about planned trip to China with Salemtowne group. Judy & Bob Oliver speak on their recent trip to China. Later, we cancel out of the China trip. Sounds like too much stair climbing for Barb's knees.

2000 Aug. 05 Karen flies to Portland, has interview at Clackamas Community College for Reference Librarian position.

2000 Aug. 09 Karen returns to Salt Lake City, having accepted job at CC College.

2000 Aug. 11 We drive to Redding for Erin Follett and Jim McCurdy's wedding at Cow Creek Community Church with reception at Simpson College. We stay at dorm at Simpson College. Tim Follett walks Erin down the aisle, using a cane as he is recovering from a broken leg, when he fell through rotted decking at their home in Montgomery Creek.

2000 Aug. 14 Salemtowne Grounds Superintendent Gary Schafer retires, and ST holds a spaghetti dinner in his honor.

2000 Aug. 23 We go to Oregon City, meet Betty and look at a condo on Beavercreek Rd. that Karen is considering.

2000 Aug. 25 Karen flies over from Salt Lake City, signs purchase agreement for unit No. 122 at the "Berryhill Condominiums"

2000 Aug. 28 Allyn Knoche and Lucy Hernreid stay at Gleneden Beach. We drive over for the day and have lunch with them.

2000 Sept. 02 We go to Hood River for Virginia and Bill Sheppard's 50th anniversary party.

2000 Sept. 06 Karen sells her home in Salt Lake City.

2000 Sept. 10 We drive to Ashland, taking stuff down for Nicole, who is attending the university there. Meet Folletts, all staying at the Best Western Windsor Inn. Have dinner with Folletts and Nicole, then we go to Shakespeare play with Folletts.

2000 Sept. 13 Barb has gum "cut down" by Dr. Wingard, dental periodontist $400.

2000 Sept. 15 Karen drives over from Salt Lake, has orientation session at Clackamas Community College. She stays with Betty until movers arrive.

2000 Sept. 17 We meet Karen and Betty in Mt. Angel for Oktoberfest.

2000 Sept. 18 Karen starts work at CC College. We go up to her condo and meet the Bekins van when it arrives with her household goods.

2000 Sept. 26 We are given a limo trip to Spirit Mt. casino for 10 people. Have no trouble filling the limo! Take along champagne for Glenn's birthday.

2000 Sept. 29 Karen closes on the condo.

2000 Sept. 30 We have a garage sale on Sat & Sunday.

2000 October Karen starts a new family tradition—going to the Indian casinos with us.

Mark goes to Nicaragua, attends "Day of the Dead" on Oct. 31 in Leon, Nicaragua.

2000 Oct. 11 We go to Siletz Bay Lodge for overnight.

2000 Oct. 19 We do slide program for Travel Club on "Color Country of Utah & Arizona"

2000 Oct. 24 Glenn sees Dr. Nisbet for nose skin cancer. Surgery scheduled for November.

2000 Oct. 30 We make a deposit on a cruise through the Panama Canal for Jan. 2001.

2000 Nov. Date?? Mark goes to the " Corn Islands" and "Bluefields" and later to western Nicaragua ( Managua, etc.)

2000 Nov. 07 Barbara and other Board members meet with Gary Schafer to work out a retirement contract with him.

2000 Nov. 09 Glenn has nose skin cancer surgery at Salem Hospital Outpatient, done by Dr. Nisbet.

2000 Nov. 19 We join Karen and Betty and attend a matinee at CCC's little theater.

2000 Nov. 23 Betty, Jason, Nicole and Karen join us for Thanksgiving dinner.

2000Nov. 26 We attend Barb's cousin Beatrice Stupfel Peters and Norbert Peters' 50th wedding anniversary celebration near their home in Roy.

2000 Dec. 08 Barb worked with Karen Barna and Judi Tripp to clean up space underneath Towne Hall.

2000 Dec. 10 We went to a German Christmas carol concert at St. Mary's Church in Mt. Angel with Karen.

Date?? Mark leaves Austin in the Colt Vista, heading for Salem via West Texas, Las Vegas and San Francisco.

2000 Dec. 18 Mark arrives in Salem.

2000 Dec. 20 Mark drives to Vancouver, B.C. visits friends there.

2000 Dec. 23 Glenn, Barb and Karen fly on Alaska Air to Victoria, B.C. Mark meets us at the Victoria airport and we all drive to the Empress Hotel, where we have adjoining rooms on the "concierge" floor of the hotel, with private lounge and breakfast, plus snacks all day long. This trip is in celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary. Mark and Karen have arranged to have a gorgeous bouquet of special roses in our room.

2000 Dec. 24 We all attend the "Carol Tea" at the Empress. Mark and Karen give us a gift of first class tickets to Europe for a planned river cruise in August 2001. In the evening, we go to Buchart Gardens to see the Christmas illumination of the gardens.

2000 Dec. 25 We have Christmas dinner at the Empress in the "Kipling" room. The Empress leaves stockings on our hotel door knob, and gives us all tea canisters filled with Empress brand tea for our Christmas present. They have beautiful brunch in the Concierge level lounge. We love it all.

2000 Dec. 26 We look for bargains on "Boxing Day" and find a German music box at about ¼ the price they were in a Rhine wine town. Great find! Drive out to Sooke, planning to have dinner at a gourmet restaurant, but it is closed. Instead, we walk along the nearby inlet, and then have burgers at a Burger King enroute back to the Empress.

2000 Dec. 27 Mark and the Colt board the ferry for Port Angeles. The rest of us take a taxi to the Victoria airport and fly home with long delays due to holiday air traffic.

2000 Dec. 28 We all go to Independence and meet Terry and Gloria for lunch. We also have a family portrait photo taken at a West Salem photography studio.

2000 Dec. 29 We have dinner at Betty's. Mark flies back to Austin, leaving the Colt stored in the Salemtowne RV lot.

2000 Dec. 31 We attend the Pinochle Club New Years Eve party at Salemtowne.

2001 Barbara starts her second year on Salemtowne Board. She is Vice-President this year. Keeps her VERY busy, but still time for travel, doctors/dentists, visits with Karen, trips to casino, other Salemtowne activities, etc. We begin going to OSU Herbarium to volunteer once a month. Work on slides mostly.

2001 Jan. 06 We attend WU Law School trial practice with Salemtowne group.

2001 Jan. 11 Barbara meets with her Stupfel & Kemmerich cousins in St. Paul.

2001 Jan. 13 We help with an OSU Herbarium workshop in Corvallis.

2001 Jan. 17 We fly to Los Angeles, and then leave about 11:30 p.m. on a HUGE jet chartered by Princess for those going on its Panama Canal cruise from Costa Rica to Puerto Rico.

2001 Jan. 18 We arrive in San Juan BEFORE the airport is open! Taken on a bus tour of San Juan—new Intel plants and swanky walled condo/shopping mall area were observed. Ended up at nice "ranch" on outskirts of the city where they gave us a very nice breakfast. Only problem—we were greatly sleep-deprived after the long flight, sitting in the middle of a five-abreast row. Could hardly stay awake! Bused down to "Puerto Caldera" in early afternoon and boarded the ship.

2001 Jan. 19 Ship sailed about 40 miles across a bay to "Puntarenas" where we went on an excellent river/wildlife viewing trip.

2001 Jan. 20 – 28 we: made a transit of the Panama Canal, starting before dawn; had unpleasant excursion in Cartagena, Colombia; enjoyed dry air of Aruba; took photography-oriented tour of Barbados; went to inland jungle waterfall in Dominica; enjoyed undersea aquarium on St. Thomas, and flew home from San Juan, Puerto Rico as soon as we got from ship to airport. Flew via Orlando/Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

2001 Jan. 30 The dentist was waiting for Glenn's return, and started working on a "bridge" for him two days after we got back.

2001 February Mark went to Colombia, visited Santa Marta, Barranquilla for "Carnivale" and San Andres Island.

2001 Feb. 17 Jason Kemmerich cut his leg badly, using chain saw on big laurel hedge.

2001 Feb. 20-21 Took overnight trip to Siletz Bay lodge and casinos.

2001 Feb. 23 Had a session with accountant, Tony Hill.

2001 Feb. 24 Mark enjoys 3-day Carnivale celebration in Barranquilla, Colombia.

2001 March Mark takes a trip to 1) Nicaragua to go down the Rio Coco River with friends Fernando and Wendy, in a dugout canoe, then Mark goes on to the "Miskito Coast" on Caribbean side.

2001 Mar. 04 To Eugene for a ballet. We have season tickets but not with Joles.

2001 Mar. 07 – 13 Betty Kemmerich to Yuma, AZ to see her parents, Ray and Louise Guenzi.

2001 Mar. 03 – 10 Mark arrives in Nicaragua, starts trip down Rio Coco.

2001 Mar. 11 Clackamas Comm. College theater with Karen for a play.

2001 Mar. 18 Mark goes to the " Miskito Coast."

2001 Mar. 31? Mark returns to Austin.

2001 Mar. 29 We fly to San Antonio, Mark meets us with his Gran Prix. We stay overnight at "The Mansion del Rio" an old and fancy hotel on the river in downtown San Antonio. Enjoy a balmy evening and stroll/dinner on the "River Walk." Mark goes back to Austin for the night.

2001 Mar. 30 Mark returns, picks us up, and we drive to Corpus Christi. Stay there two nights. Visit: "USS Lexington" aircraft carrier, (now museum in Corpus Christi Bay); North Padre Island; take shortest ferry ride across " Aransas Pass" channel; also to Aransas Wildlife Refuge, see whooping cranes, home on historic Texas highway, visiting "Goliad St. Park" site of Texas/Mexico battle.

2001 April 01-04 We stay at Mark's in Austin, enjoying spring wildflowers—everywhere, including the Nat. Wildflower Center, Mark has party for us, and we enjoy meeting his friends.

2001 April 07 We go to OSU Herbarium for an all-day workshop.

2001 April 15 Betty, Jason & Karen have Easter dinner with us.

2001 April 19 Glenn videotapes the spring performance of the "Salemtowne Players."

2001 April 22 To Eugene to another ballet. Joles meets us for lunch at the Hilton hotel.

2001 April 24 To OSU Herbarium for volunteer work day.

2001 April 27 Barb attends annual Chi Omega reunion, at Mt. Angel this year.

2001 May 05 Karen joins us for an NPSO trip to "Independence Rock" at Marion Forks, Hwy.22. See LOTS of pretty Calypso orchids.

2001 May 07 Mark comes for a birthday visit. Also places ads to sell the Colt Vista.

2001 May 10 Mark sells the Colt for $3,000. to woman from so. Oregon.

2001 May 12 We go to Oregon City, meet Karen and Betty and have birthday lunch for Mark. Mark stays overnight with Karen.

2001 May 13 Mark flies from PDX to Nicaragua.

2001 May 14 We go to Prineville for field trip up to Big Summit Prairie and to Painted Hills. Stay two nights in Prineville and one night at the "Oregon Hotel" in Mitchell. Bob & Judy Oliver join us. We all enjoy Mitchell, with its bear that has his own "spa" tub and other unusual town critters.

2001 May 19 We go to WU Jury trial practice—Barb is coordinator for Salemtowne.

2001 May 27 We go to Mt. Angel, decorate family graves and eat at the "Mt. Angel Brewery."

2001 May 28 We go to Willamette Nat. Cemetery on Golden's bus.

2001 May 30 Leslie has tongue surgery for recurrence of cancer. Terry goes down to be with him. We pay balance for river cruise trip in August.

2001 May 31 We go to Siletz Bay Lodge with Betty. Glenn gets sick, we go home same day.

2001 June 05 Barb and other Board members attend the Marvin Berg vs. condo assoc. trial at Polk Co. Courthouse.

2001 June 07 Karen leaves for Germany. She goes as an escort for Clackamas Comm. College group. They go to Hannover, visit Bremen and other places in Hannover area.

2001 June 12 Barb goes with Board to golf course irrigation presentation/lunch in Tualatin.

2001 June 15 We go to Ashland for Nicole's graduation from Southern Oregon St. Univ. Betty also attends.

2001 June 16 We attend Nicole's graduation, then go on to Cave Junction Inn where we meet Tim & Kathi Follett.

2001 June 17 Show Follett's our favorite rare flower areas around Illinois River bridge and Oregon Mt. Road.

2001 June 21 We show Panama Canal slides at Travel Club. In afternoon, Salemtowne puts on big retirement party for our mail carrier, Del Baker.

2001 July Karen goes to Bavaria and Austria on a break in Hannover trip. Stays in Mittenwald in Bavaria.

2001 July 05 Doris Terril and husband "Mick" come for a visit.

2001 July 12 – 13 We go to Astoria with Knoches, stay at Red Lion Hotel, enjoy riding city trolley, go out to south jetty overlook.

2001 July 16 Glenn had lung test at Salem Hospital.

2001 July 19 Karen returns from Germany trip.

2001 July 25 Barb picks Marionberries with Betty Budzik, Salemtowne office manager.

2001 July 31 Mark arrives.

2001 August 02 Karen and Kanchi come down, in preparation for "family history trip" to Skagit Valley area.

2001 Aug. 03 Barbara, Mark and Karen go to Poulsbo, WA. Have dinner with Barb's cousin, Brian (Jody) Dameron. Visit submarine museum enroute to Poulsbo.

2001 Aug. 04 We go to Port Townsend, see old gun batteries, take ferry to mainland, visit Skagit Co. Museum in LaConner, stop in Sedro-Woolley, go to cemetery, on to Concrete, staying at the "N. Cascades Inn." Have dinner in Concrete with Lea von Pressentin. Visit with Ed Pressentin after dinner at daughter's home in Concrete.

2001 Aug. 05 We find that the August Kemmerich homestead is now part of Rasar St. Park in Birdsview. Also visit the Karl von Pressentin ranch on south side of Skagit River in Birdsview.

2001 Aug. 06 Enroute to Everett, we stop at the Sedro-Woolley museum, tour it with Noel Bourasaw. Stay at "Cascadia Inn" in Everett, Ross Kemmerich comes over to see us from his home in Monroe. He treats us to pizza in motel room.

2001 Aug. 07 We take a tour of the huge Boeing assembly plant in Everett, then drop Karen off at Sea-Tac for her trip to Utah for Shakespeare plays. Mark and Barbara stop at State Capitol in Olympia, tour capitol and see damage from recent earthquake. Also stop at State Parks office in Olympia, get paperwork showing incorporation of Kemmerich homestead into state park. A Mr. Rasar had purchased the homestead, hoping to build an RV park—flood zone, so couldn't. Gave the property to the state. Return to Salem.

2001 Aug. 11 Barb and Mark head north again—stay at Comfort Inn, Federal Way.

2001 Aug. 12 We pick up Karen at Sea-Tac, then drive on to the von Pressentin family reunion at Lea von Pressentin's summer home on Samish Island. German historian, Friedrich-Franz von P. and his sister and brother-in-law attend, along with F-F's English friend, Chris Wallis. Stay in Mt. Vernon overnight.

2001 Aug. 13 We return to Salem.

2001 Aug. 14 Mark leaves Portland, enroute to Bolivia for several weeks.

2001 Aug. 21 Several of Salem Chi O's come for afternoon visit with Barbara Duda and husband—who live in Atlanta, GA.

2001 Aug. 27 We leave Portland for Vienna, via JFK, in New York City, for start of our river trip on Danube and Rhine rivers. Fly first/business class thanks to frequent flyer tickets from Mark and Karen as anniversary gift.

2001 Aug. 28 We arrive in Paris, transfer to plane for Vienna. Arrive in Vienna about noon; take bus to river cruise boat docked on Danube near UN center. Our cabin #215 on the "MS Viking Danube." During our cruise we visit: Vienna, Abbey at Melk, Linz, Passau, Regensburg, Danube Gorge, Nuremburg, Bamberg, Rothenburg, Wurzburg, Frankfurt, Mainz, Rudesheim, Cologne, and Amsterdam.

2001 Sept. 09 We leave the river cruise ship, stay overnight in Amsterdam, going to the Rijksmuseum.

2001 Sept. 10 We fly to New York City, plane is delayed by lightning storm over JFK, we notice Twin Towers as plane circles to land. We arrive in Portland at 11 p.m.; Karen meets us and drives us to Salem. Get home at 2:30 a.m.

2001 Sept. 11 We wake up, turn on TV at 6 a.m. in time to see first Twin Tower collapse after plane is flown into it. Mark was in San Jose de Chiquitos, Bolivia overnight, and this morning he saw the second plane hit a Twin Tower in New York City, in real time.

2001 Sept. 25 Mark flies home from La Paz, Bolivia with only about 22 passengers on his jet from Miami to Dallas.

2001 October 02 Barbara and LaFyrne arrange for the Salemtowne office to get a modern photocopier, earning the everlasting gratitude of our office manager, Betty Budzik. The copier is on a lease—probably the first time Salemtowne has gone into debt!

2001 Oct. 04 We go to Albany and meet Terry and Gloria for lunch at nice Italian place.

2001 Oct. 18 We show slides of our latest trip—the river cruise from Vienna to Amsterdam.

2001 Oct. 25 Mark drove his 21-year old Jeep to Mexico, all the way to Cuernavaca, where he visited Fernando and Anita Aguilar. Left the Jeep with Aguilars and flew back to Austin.

2001 Oct. 27 Karen joins us for the Salemtowne "Fang" (Halloween) party.

2001 Nov. Barbara's left knee is now hurting.

2001 Nov. 20 Mark comes for Thanksgiving.

2001 Nov. 22 Betty, Karen, Mark, Terry & Gloria join us for Thanksgiving dinner. Bonnie Halliday calls in the evening to say that Roger just passed away this afternoon.

2001 Nov. 24 Glenn and Barbara fly to Sacramento, stay overnight, drive to Downieville next morning.

2001 Nov. 25 Roger's funeral is held at the Downieville Methodist Church. Terry and Gloria drive down. We all stay at a B&B in Downieville. Afterwards, family and friends meet at Bonnie's for supper.

2001 Nov. 26 We drive back to Sacramento and fly back to Portland.

2001 Dec. 10 Barb has prescribed physical therapy for her sore knee. Only makes it worse!

Dec. 14 Betty Kemmerich is admitted to the hospital for abdominal pain. Barbara has an ultrasound to check on breast cysts.

2001 Dec. 15 Betty has gall bladder surgery.

2001 Dec. 16 Mark flew back to Mexico and Cuernavaca to pick up his Jeep. He drives it solo, through San Miguel Allende, which he enjoys so much he stays four days. Taking a shorter route back to Texas, the Jeep gives out near the town of " China." The Jeep stays with a mechanic in China and Mark uses a variety of buses to get back to Austin.

2001 Dec. 21 Karen flies home from Florida.

2001 Dec. 23 We stay overnight at Spirit Mt. hotel, and enjoy their complimentary anniversary dinner.

2002 March We get new neighbors—John and Mary Miller sell the home to our north to Jim and Grace LeCouix.

2002 Mar. 05 Glenn, Barbara, Karen and Betty take a tour of the Clackamas Fish Hatchery, now used by Ore. State Fish and Wildlife. Tour is conducted by Anne Pressentin—a distant cousin of Barbara and Karen!

2002 Mar. 07 We see musical "Kiss Me Kate" at Western Or. St. Univ.

2002 Mar. 10 We go to the play "Importance of Being Earnest" at Clackamas Comm. College with Karen.

2002 Mar. 19 Mark leaves for Oman, to do gravity survey in the Gulf of Oman, on a tugboat, the Stanford Explorer. With many delays (ship runs aground, gravity meter equipment malfunctions) he is there for 3 months—to June 19. Gets to spend time in Dubai, one of the Arab Emirates, while ship is in dry dock, drives rental car to Masirah Island (via ferry), etc. Sets up an entertaining e-mail quiz "What is "Hormuz" named after?" when his ship sails past the Strait of Hormuz from Dubai back to Oman.

Karen also leaves for the exotic Aransas, Texas area for birding during her college's spring break

2002 Mar. 31 We fly to Laughlin, NV on a "Sun Country" charter flight. $179. each for four nights at the " Riverside" casino and hotel.

2002 April 10 Barbara testifies at the Salem City Council meeting regarding closure of the West Salem Library.

2002 April 13 We take part in NPSO field trip to work at OSU Herbarium.

2002 April 16 We go back to OSU Herbarium for more volunteer work.

2002 April 19 Karen goes to Denver for a Star Trek convention. Her kitty, "Kanchi" is our guest for the weekend.

2002 April 26 We start a trip to Las Vegas, visiting: Bezemers in Turlock, CA; stay with Mullans in Las Vegas, taking Mullans to the Excalibur "Tournament of Kings" show and dinner; meet Pat and AK Downard in Mesquite, return to Salem via Barstow, Lone Pine, Carson City where we met Bill and Maxine Paull for dinner; Ashland, and home on May 7.

2002 May 09 Mark celebrates his 50th birthday about a tugboat in the Gulf of Oman by having his head shaved, while the ship is sailing through 10-foot seas! Back in Oregon, Karen collects fifty different bottles of beer for Mark's birthday and saves them for Mark's next visit.

2002 May 17 Barbara and Karen accompany several of her Kemmerich cousins to Birdsview & Rasar St. Park. Stop at Court House in Mt. Vernon and copy some of August Kemmerich's will.

2002 May 18 They tour park with the park manager, and cousin Pat Napier identifies where August Kemmerich's ranch house once stood. We stay in Concrete. Pat has chance to meet a friend who was her schoolmate in Concrete.

2002 May 19 Enroute back to Salem, we stop in Everett and cousin Ross treats us to breakfast. Cousins on trip: Dorothy Duyck, Beatrice Peters, Pat Napier and her children, Mark & Roa, and Joe, Mark Stupfel, Barbara & Karen.

2002 Sept. 03 The four of us drive to Kennewick and visit East Benton County Historical Museum where Terril and Halliday artifacts have been donated. Orvel, Vina and Rupps have donated much time at the museum. Go to " Riverview Cemetery" to investigate having Irl & Noma interred there.

We meet Terril & Halliday relatives for dinner: Doris (Orvel Terril's widow) & husband, Mick; Vina Hudson, Pat & Dave Ashby, Bob & Alice Rupp; Jackie & Ted Johnson (Ivel's daughter).

2002 Sept. 04 We drive to Coulee Dam, visiting Sun Lakes St. Park and Dry Falls enroute. Enroute, we stop for coffee in Moses Lake, and Mark and Karen introduce us to Starbucks coffee!! At Coulee, we take a limited tour of the dam powerhouse (effect of 9-11) and in evening we watch laser show displayed on dam spillway as water pours over it. Look at historical photos in dam museum. Irl Halliday worked on the dam for Guy F. Atkinson one of the major contractors. Visit local casino (pretty minimal)

2002 Sept. 05 We drive to Lake Chelan, take the day boat tour to Stehekin, have lunch and visit museum. Karl von Pressentin was among first Europeans to travel over Cascade Pass and come down to Lake Chelan. We see likely spot where Karl shot a mountain goat which thoughtfully fell into his canoe and died!

Stayed at Vantage, and toured Gingko St. Park museum there. Tried to drive to fossil area, missed turnoff, just long round trip back to Vantage.

2002 Sept. 06 Drove back to Salem via Sunnyside (where Irl Halliday once had a farm), Prosser (where Karen taught math & science at high school), Patterson (where Irl's older brother, Fred, lived), Maryhill Museum, Oregon trail site near Deschutes River, and Multnomah Falls. Whew!

2002 Sept. 08 Betty came down and we all celebrated Karen's birthday.

2002 Sept. 09 Mark left. Some time in September, Mark returned to work at the re-organized LaCoste & Romberg. His first assignment: to China to convince the Chinese customer that their two $500,000 gravity meters would work. Took meters back to Austin, improved. Mark wrote a manual for meters back in Austin, took meters back to satisfied Chinese customers.

2002 Sept. 10 We took all 12,000!! of Glenn's wildflower slides to the OSU Herbarium, to be used in their online flora and associated websites.

2002 Sept. 12 Willamette Archeological Soc. Starts first of two-month series of programs associated with Hallie Ford Art Museum Egyptian exhibit. Karen joined us for many of these over next two weeks.

2002 Sept. 14 We took part in the Parking Lot Sale at Salemtowne. Sold our bar and stools for $700. total.

2002 Sept. 20 Now that Barbara was no longer a Board member, she was back to taking minutes at Board meetings from time to time.

2002 Sept. 23 Glenn tries the Salemtowne Tai Chi class.

2002 Sept. 26 Glenn gets his partial plate from Dr. Nakagawa.

2002 Sept. 27 We take part in our Class of 1952 Willamette Univ. reunion. Go to a Chi O reunion luncheon, in evening to reception at the " Montag Center" on campus.

09-28 We have class photo at WU, then go to our luncheon at Illahee Country Club. The teddy bears Claribelle Ross and Barbara choose for table centerpieces are a big hit—Barbara is very disappointed to win a flower pot and not the teddy bear. Glenn makes it all right on her birthday.

2002 Oct. 01 No good deed goes unpunished. We now volunteer at the OSU Herbarium to pick out some of Glenn's slides for the "Ericacaea" group.

2002 Nov. 02 Lufthansa offers special fare to introduce its new service from Portland to Frankfurt. Karen and Barbara decide to fly to Germany in May, 2003 and pay for their tickets now ($559 each).

2002 Nov. 06 Glenn had cataract removal surgery on left eye, done by Dr. Tibolt at outpatient offices on Commercial Street.

2002 Nov. 08 Barbara's cousin, Pat Napier, had bad infection, resulting in a stroke affecting her left side. Moved to Sunnyside Care Center for rehab.

2002 Nov. 13 The people who bought our bar and stools in early September finally have movers pick it up!

2002 Nov. 14 Dr. Nakagawa gives Barb a new crown to replace one that fell off at the end of October.

2002 Nov. 18 We go to potluck dinner at Judy and Bob Olivers—NPSO group discusses dwindling participation in chapter.

2002 Nov. 24 Mark flies to San Cristobal,

Chiapas, Mexico on VERY cheap frequent flyer ticket (10,000 mi. round trip, anywhere in Mexico.) Takes tour to Yaxchilan/Bonampak, Mayan ruins, then to Palenque.

2002 Nov. 26 Glenn and Barbara meet with lawyer, Clark Williams, to review our financial picture.

2002 Nov. 28 Karen¸ Betty & Jason come for Thanksgiving dinner.

2002 Dec. 01 Mark returns from Chiapas, Mexico.

2002 Dec. 08 We fly to Laughlin on chartered package from the Riverside Hotel. ($189 per person). Mullans are also there for Pioneer Hotel blackjack tournament. David wins $8750! He also enters Edgewater Hotel blackjack tournament. No big wins. But, he treats us all to a lunch and dinner at the Edgewater Hotel.

2002 Dec. 26 We packed our suitcases and set out on a 3-day trip to a strange and exotic land...downtown Portland, Oregon ! Took in the "Lewis & Clark" Omnimax movie at OMSI, and then checked into the Hilton Hotel. Thanks to Mark's frequent guest privileges; we got upgraded to their new tower across the street, with very elegant rooms and complimentary breakfast in either hotel dining room. Parked the car in the Hilton garage and never took it out until our departure from the city. Enjoyed Pioneer Square lights, shops at upscale Pioneer Place Mall, Bridgeport microbrewery tour, Portland Art Museum, Powell's Book Store, "Todai" a lavish Japanese buffet restaurant, ballet spoof of the Nutcracker called "The Nut Finally Cracked," and the Imago Dance Theater.

2002 Dec. 30 Mark leaves. Glenn has re-check on cataract surgery with Dr. Stevens. All looks good.

2002 Dec. 31 We attend New Years Eve pinochle party at Salemtowne.

2003 January During this year, we continue ongoing activities—casino visits, working with OSU on Oregon Flora, attending Archeology meetings, Barb works with Writers Group and takes minutes for Salemtowne Board meetings.

2003 Jan. 10 Gloria Halliday has rotator cuff shoulder surgery,

2003 Jan. 17 Barb goes to visit a relative on Jessie Taylor Pressentin's side, "Chris Kellow" who lives in Eugene. They trade family genealogy items.

2003 Jan. 26 Glenn goes to Salem Hospital Emergency Room with very high blood pressure: 224/97. Later, Dr. Winthrop starts him on "Doxazosin"

2003 Jan. 29 A re-check of Glenn's blood pressure is very good (130/76). Armed with that reassurance, we go to Portland airport area, staying at the Comfort Suites overnight.

2003 Jan. 30 We fly to San Diego and board the Holland America cruise ship "Statendam" for a 10-day Baja California cruise. Visited Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan on west coast of Mexico, and La Paz, Santa Rosalia, Loreto and Cabo San Lucas on the peninsula.

2003 Feb. 9 We fly back to Portland from San Diego.

2003 February After our return from the cruise we spent the rest of the month paying visits to doctors and Indian casinos in about equal proportion.

2003 Feb. 27 Barb sees Dr. Winthrop for persistent cough (probably "GERD") takes "Protonix. Glenn's hip painful, limited his walking while on the cruise.

2003 Mar. 01 We celebrate the 80th birthday of Barb's cousin, Carole Stupfel Foster at her retirement community, " King City" in Tualatin, OR.

2003 Mar. 6-12 Mark attends business meeting in Toronto. It's now Karen's turn to have dental surgery; she has a gum cut down.
Friend David Mullan has surgery for gall bladder and severe peritonitis. Spends the next 24 days in hospital on respirator and sedated. Recovers well.

2003 Mar. 9 We go to see "Lend me a Tenor" matinee at Clackamas Comm. College with Karen.

2003 Mar. 13 We meet with Tony Hill, CPA re: income tax return.

2003 Mar. 15 We celebrate Terry Halliday's birthday with them at Spirit Mt. casino.

Karen and U of U Library friend, Yvonne Stroup, depart on a driving and birding trip through California, all the way to the Salton Sea and back. "Kanchi" is our guest.

2003 Mar. 17 Barb takes minutes at Salemtowne "Forum" where we hear about "Asset Replacement Funds" from a Portland CPA.

2003 April 1 Barb goes to Milwaukie to meet her high school classmates, now planning their 55th class reunion.

2003 April 3 Barb & Salemtowne Office Mgr. Betty Budzik take lunch to housebound former Board Chairman, Dorothy Paine.

2003 April 5 Karen and Barbara began making serious plans for their May trip to Germany.

2003 April 8 Barb has her annual "peripheral vision test" to check for glaucoma. "Good" the dr. says. Pressures: 21 in each eye.

Barb also sees ENT Dr. Bruce Johnson about feeling a "lump" in her throat. DX: GERD, have barium swallow test on April 10. [Test findings: I have a small hiatal hernia, and my Schottzke’s Ring was inflamed.] Treat with Protonix.

2003 April 13 Glenn and Barbara take another 5-day jaunt to Laughlin on the Riverside Hotel’s nonstop charter flight.

2003 April 24 Karen goes to San Jose for a long-weekend Skeptics conference.

2003 April 28 We hire Michael Parent to do some yard cleanup, weed spraying. He also has done our bark dusting.

2003 April 30 Barb attends farewell lunch for Grounds Supt. Jeff Halfman—going to another senior community. Glenn and Barb attend an Estate Planning session at WU.

2003 May 3 Mark leaves for a 3-week personal vacation in Colombia and Peru. Visited VERY old pre-Incan ruins in Peru.

2003 May 6 Karen comes down to Clark Williams' office to sign her will.

2003 May 7 Bonnie Hiatt is in Portland to visit daughter Candie and husband Dale Farley. We meet her & Candie at Dale Farley’s wood shop in Oregon City with Karen.

2003 May 8 We attend Spring Dance Concert at WOU, Monmouth.

2003 May 11 Karen and Barbara leave for Germany on Lufthansa--following the Arctic Circle to Hamburg via Frankfurt. Spend 3 weeks looking for German “roots” in: Schoenberg near Kiel, Prestin in former GDR, Lindlar, near Cologne, and Reil, on the Mosel River. Also took a Rhine River day cruise and spent a few nights in the Bavarian Alps at Mittenwald. (See trip log on our website)

2003 May 26 Mark returns from Lima, Peru.

2003 June 02 Karen and Barb return from Germany. Karen brings back a nasty cold. Unseasonably HOT in Salem.

2003 June 08 We spend a couple days at Siletz Bay Lodge, Lincoln City.

2003 June 18 Mark goes to Toronto for a business meeting.

2003 June 19 Barb attends Watershed Council meeting at new West Salem high school.

2003 June 20 We buy a new Compaq computer for Glenn at Best Buy, Salem --a total of four computers in the house!

2003 June 22 Mark returns to Austin from Toronto.

2003 June 23 We meet Karen, Betty & Nicole for lunch in Woodburn. Nicole is visiting from Florida.

2003 June 23-27 We take a trip down the Oregon Coast to Crescent City, then to Cave Junction. Saw aftermath of huge “Biscuit Fire” in summer of 2002.

2003 July 3-5 Karen attends a reunion of her fellow Peace Corps volunteers from Nepal. They meet in Las Vegas.

2003 July Glenn starts a “telecommuting” project for the Oregon Flora project--proofing the hundreds of entries to be posted on their webpage.

2003 July 7 We sign up for Comcast cable service, get special monthly rate, $29.99 until Dec. 31.

2003 July 11 Mark comes for a visit. We have reservations at Timberline Lodge and Kahneeta. Glenn has short bout of stomach flu; we cancel Timberline Lodge.

2003July 15-17 We drive with Mark and Karen to Kahneeta Resort near Warm Springs, OR, stopping at Timberline Lodge for a short tour of the hotel. Stay in hotel one night, in "Neesha" cottage second night. Beautiful resort—and a casino!! Mark & Karen go on kayak trip on river, Glenn & Barbara gamble. We tour Warm Springs Indian Museum—very impressive.

2003 July 20 Mark leaves for Austin. Barb and Betty Budzik pick Marionberries at Gehrings.

2003 July 22 We go to OSU Herbarium for an Oregon Flora "party" celebrating milestone in digitizing Herbarium specimens.

2003 July 26 We buy a new mattress at "Mattress World" in Salem. Sealy Elite Ultra Plush after “sleeping on a cloud” on the last Sealy since 1982. VERY "pillowy." Then, we go to Oregon City, meeting Karen and Betty and celebrate Betty's birthday at the "Wichita Pub."

2003 July 27 We attend Barb's 55th Milwaukie High School reunion at Ernie & Jackie Thompson's home in Redlands. David & Carolyn Mullan come from Las Vegas for reunion.

2003 July 28 Karen goes to Salt Lake City, and Cedar City, Utah to visit friends & attend Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City.

2003 August 03 We attend the Stupfel/Kemmerich family picnic at Brightwood Park near Mt. Hood with Karen.

2003 August 04-06 We meet the Knoches for lunch at Gleneden on the coast, then spend two nights at Siletz Bay Lodge with the Mullans. Went to Yaquina Head--and the casino. Carolyn Mullan needs oxygen and wheelchair to get around now.

2003 August 11-12 Mullans stay with us for two nights before heading back to Las Vegas. We tour the State Capitol.

2003 August 14 - 17 Karen attends conference in Eugene.

2003 August 18 Barb has mammogram and ultrasound to check a breast lump—a benign cyst.

2003 August 19 We had our hearing checked—passed. “Whassay??”

2003 August 20 We attend a "patio party" on the Farmhouse patio.

2003 August 24 We spend an evening in Portland, staying at the Sheraton near the river and enjoying a dinner cruise on the “Portland Spirit” ship, courtesy of Barbara’s Chi Omega sorority sisters. Their thanks for her job as volunteer editor of the “Nu Delta News” for 16 years.

2003 August 28 Karen attends an astronomy “star party” near Big Summit Prairie in Central Oregon --with 2,000 other star gazers. Saw Mars as close as it will get for another 20,000 years. Mark leaves for Buenos Aires and Uruguay on a personal vacation, going solo to Buenos Aires and Uruguay for 2 weeks.
Glenn sees Dr. Winthrop for "hip bursitis."

2003 Sept. 8 We celebrate Karen's birthday with a bus trip to Chinook Winds.

2003 Sept. 11 Glenn and Barbara have a compensatory overnight at Timberline Lodge, to make up for not staying there when Mark was out in July. Almost snowed!

2003 Sept. 13 We take part in the now-annual Parking Lot Sale at Salemtowne--didn’t make much, but got rid of that fourth computer, and other “space hog” stuff.

2003 Sept. 20 Karen and Barb Inglin go on sea bird boat trip out of Newport, OR.
Late in the month, Glenn finally took the plunge, and started selling items on E-Bay. Started out with his own 1938 travel decals--and was amazed at the prices they brought. (Over $100. total).

2003 Sept. 28 Glenn and Barbara celebrated Glenn’s 69th birthday for the eighth time, by flying down to Reno for a couple nights at Boomtown Resort in Reno. Rooms were complimentary, the slots? Not so much. Glenn’s sore hip was really bothering him--hard to walk more than a few feet without wincing.

2003 October 03 Glenn's hip pain worse, he has shot in sacro-iliac muscle.

2003 October 05 Doris Terril Phillips, widow of Glenn’s uncle, Orville Terril, passed away on Oct. 5 after long battle with cancer.

2003 October 08 We attend the Chinook Winds "Senior Fair"

2003 October 13 Salem Electric erects an osprey platform in RV storage area. Amazing to watch as all recycled material (power pole, cable reel, etc.) is assembled. In the evening we go to dinner at Chi Omega alum, Vivian Webbers, with other Chi O's.

2003 October 23 Glenn's brother, Leslie, passed away on the 23rd, after suffering with a neck tumor for several months. His friend, Dolores Thares, took wonderful care of him through it all. No funeral, and Les was cremated. (Terry gets custody of Les' cremains. We sent Dolores a “memorial” gift--to be used for a personal vacation for her We talked to him by phone the day before his death.

2003 October 25 We attend the "Fang" Halloween party at Salemtowne, and are official photographers.

2003 October 26 We drive John and Mary Miller to Silver Falls St. Park. Even though they are Oregon natives, they haven't been to the park in probably 40 years!

2003 October 29 Glenn has a bone scan at Salem Hospital --his hip pain is really in his lower back!

2003 November 07 Glenn sees cataract surgeon, Dr. Tibolt, for a diffraction problem with one new lens.

2003 November 12 Glenn checks with Dr. Winthrop on skipped heartbeats.

2003 November 23 Mark flies out for Thanksgiving Week. So did Nicole, from Florida, so we had the entire family together--a rare occurrence. After Mark's arrival at Karen's, we all go to see the play, "Uncle Vanya" at Clackamas Comm. College

2003 November 28 - 30 The four of us go to Astoria. Stayed at Comfort Suites on river, enjoy the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Columbia Bar jetty, Ft. Clatsop, Ecola St. Park near Cannon Beach and Indian casinos, coming and going.

2003 December 01 Mark leaves for Austin

2003 Dec. 08 Barb has ultrasound to check on breast cyst. Has cyst drained by Dr. Eisenhut a few days later.

2003 Dec. 10 Glenn has minor laser eye surgery on left eye with Dr. Tibolt to correct diffusion problem. It works.

2003 Dec. 14 We attend Norvada Smedley's Christmas "musicale."

2003 Dec. 11 Barbara’s back started hurting—Dr. Winthrop says it is her sacro-iliac joint, same as Glenn!

2003 Dec. 16 Mark goes to go to Taiwan on Dec. 16 to install a gravity meter, then to Philippines to visit friends. Returned Jan. 6.

2003 Dec. 20-21 Karen's friend, Susan & daughter Elizabeth visit her for a couple days.

2003 Dec. 22-23 We celebrate our 53rd anniversary with an overnight in Lincoln City.

2003 Dec. 25 We spend Christmas Day with Betty, Jason, Nicole (home from Florida ) and Karen.

2003 Dec. 30 – Jan. 3 We leave on Southwest Air for Las Vegas. Reno-Vegas flight delayed because of snow at the Las Vegas airport! Stayed at the " Polo Towers " with Mullans. Tight security as Vegas was designated a top terrorist target for New Years Eve.

2003 Dec. 31 We visit the beautiful Bellagio hotel, see their Christmas plantings in their conservatory, watched their fountains at noon. Picked up pizzas to enjoy in condo in evening. Watched HUGE crowds gather on Strip below. Fireworks at midnight from tops of casinos. Helicopter gun ships patrolling the Strip, shining lights in condo windows.
